«Breaking News» Married At First Sight has announced applications are open for the 2020 season

Married At First Sight has been nothing short of a ratings juggernaut this year, thanks to the show's titillating storylines of wife-swapping and betrayal.

But despite MAFS' raging popularity, it's clear that many fans would rather watch from afar than appear on the show themselves.

This became abundantly clear on Monday when Nine announced that applications are open for singles to audition for a spot on the 2020 season.

'I'd rather be shot at first sight, thanks though!' Fans have mercilessly mocked Channel Nine after MAFS announced applications are open for its 2020 season on Monday

It wasn't long before swarms of fans took to social media to mercilessly mock MAFS over it's casting announcement.

Many fans shared comical responses to the call-out, with one posting on Facebook: 'I'd rather be shot at first sight, thanks though.'

'Would rather run naked down Bourke Street for a few hours than appear on this train wreck!' another viewer agreed on Twitter.

Meanwhile, other viewers reflected on the fact that MAFS' application calls for genuine singles searching for love - something that doesn't sit with the fact that many participants have previously been outed as paid actors.

'Maybe try NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) next time. You'll get better actors,' one bemused fan Tweeted.

'I thought only actors could apply!' another Twitter user laughed.

Other unimpressed viewers remarked on the show's trend of casting people with a very specific body-shapes and aesthetic enhancements.

'Are you taking anyone over a size 8????? Do only skinny good looking people deserve to find love? Why don’t you actually do a REALity show!' one raged on Facebook.

'Sorry I'm too normal, thoughtful, respectful of others & don't have Botox or a ducks beak to be accepted on MAFS,' huffed another Facebook fan.

Some even encouraged MAFS to open it's horizons to accepting participants of an older generation rather than 'young model types'.

Among the more skeptical responses are those questioning whether the audition call-out is actually a publicity stunt to convince the masses that participants are genuine members of the public and not paid actors.

Despite this, some fans of the show have advertised their excitement at the prospect of starring on the show, including The Bachelor's Elora Tahiti.

According to the official MAFS casting call-out, producers are looking for both men and women of all ages and backgrounds.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
