«Breaking News» Idaho's state utility says it will phase out coal and use '100 per cent clean energy' by 2045

Idaho is ditching coal in favor of renewable energy, the state's public utility company says.

Idaho Power says that it plans to have 100 per cent of its energy come from hydroelectric, solar, and wind by the year 2045.

The company says that its goal is to no longer rely on sources of energy that produce carbon dioxide, National Public Radio reported.

'We believe this goal is attainable,' Idaho Power President and CEO Darrel Anderson said in announcing the plan.

The public company says it will stop using two coal power plants by 2025.

It is also considering ways to shut down its third - and last - coal plant.

Idaho Power currently gets about 20 per cent of its energy from coal sources. Almost half of the electricity generated is from hydro power.

To continue with its transition away from fossil fuel-sourced energy, Idaho Power announced a deal to buy electricity from a 120-megawatt solar farm.

The farm will be built near the town of Twin Falls. The deal is still subject to approval from regulators.

Idaho is the latest state to commit to using 100 per cent clean energy within the coming decades.

In September, California's then-governor, Jerry Brown, signed a bill requiring the state to source electricity from exclusively carbon-free sources by 2045, a move aimed at combating climate change that clashes with President Trump's pro-fossil fuel policies.

The law makes California the largest global economy to commit to 100 percent clean energy.

Hawaii, which relies heavily on fossil fuels because of its dependence on jet fuel necessary to sustain its tourism industry, set a similar goal.

Coal has been the primary source of fuel for U.S. power plants for the last century, but its use has been declining since peaking in 2007, which is expected to continue as the federal government imposes rules to limit carbon emissions.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday defeated the 'Green New Deal' resolution that called for tackling climate change by moving the United States off fossil fuels, while Democrats said the vote was a political stunt on an issue that will not die.

The vote was 57 against the resolution in the 100-member chamber, with 43 Democrats voting 'present,' avoiding an up-or-down vote.

Republicans won over Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and one independent senator, Angus King, who usually votes with that party.

The Green New Deal, introduced last month by Democrats, marked an initial attempt to define legislation to create government-led investments in clean energy like wind and solar power, infrastructure and social programs.

Democrats have said the plan, which is backed by most of the party's presidential candidates, was designed to spur debate during the 2020 campaign on the intricate problem of how to tackle climate change while boosting the economy, not to force the party to take sides in a quick vote.

But Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell forced a vote before the plan had the chance for a national debate or hearings in Congress.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
