«Breaking News» David Walliams believes Ant and Dec are 'the closest we have to Morecambe and Wise'

David Walliams claims Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s formidable presenting partnership could last for the next forty years, despite recent off-screen problems putting a strain on their working relationship.

The versatile TV personality has developed a close friendship with the presenters through his judging role on ITV show Britain’s Got Talent, and he believes they have the potential to be the Morecombe and Wise of their generation.

Speaking to The Mirror, Walliams, 47, admits the only celebrity to have enjoy the same consistent, enduring popularity was the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, whose career spanned more than half a century.

‘Bruce was getting on for 70-years in the business,’ he said. ‘It’s quite hard to think that anybody could have that kind of longevity because of the way technology changes, it’s tough.

‘But I think the only people you could imagine having a 60 or 70-year career are Ant and Dec. You can imagine them in 30-years on TV, two old blokes who are still in love.’

The Newcastle-born presenters are regular feature on mainstream TV, amassing multi-million pound fortunes through lucrative presenting roles on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

But their partnership suffered a blow in June 2017 when McPartlin entered residential rehabilitation to overcome drug and alcohol dependency.

The presenter was later arrested after colliding with another vehicle while driving under the influence close to his west London home.

The incident resulted in an £86,000 fine and a temporary suspension from TV, during which he submitted to a second spell in treatment.

Donnelly was left to host the Britain's Got Talent final alone for the first time, with Holly Willoughby filling McPartlin's shoes during the 18th series of I'm A Celeb in December.

McPartlin returned to work for the latest series of Britain's Got Talent the following month, and Walliams admits his off-screen issues have not affected his mainstream appeal.

'When something is successful, there is always a sprinkling of fairy dust, you can’t quite explain what makes it work,' he added. 'They make you smile when they come on TV.

'They are funny and multi-talented. You can get them to sing, dance, act. They have a wonderful relationship and true camaraderie, they are the closest we have to Morecambe and Wise.'

Controversy: Despite his success McPartlin has struggled with a string of personal setbacks, including drug and alcohol addiction, an arrest for drink driving and a subsequent £86,000 fine (pictured, outside court)

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
