«Breaking News» Airbnb struggles to crack down on hosts who secretly record guests

Airbnb has come under fire for a series of incidents where hosts have installed hidden cameras to potentially record guests, despite its claims that it's cracking down on camera recording policies.

The online accommodation site has been plagued with a series of complaints after horrified guests found hidden lenses stashed in bedrooms and cameras with pan and zoom capabilities set up in living rooms.

Four outraged guests have reported discovering cameras where they shouldn't be to The Atlantic, and accuse Airbnb of treating them poorly and endangering their safety after they reported the incidents.

Airbnb policy allows hosts to have cameras in public spaces in their homes, but not in bathrooms or bedrooms or in any space where guests sleep.

Then in early 2018 Airbnb beefed up measures saying hosts need to disclose if they have cameras anywhere on their property and guests will be notified and must click an 'agree' box, to indicate they know cameras are allowed and they consent to being filmed.

While some hosts have cameras to assure their homes aren’t trashed or items aren’t stolen, the placement of secret cameras in private spaces raises questions to ulterior motives.

Max Vest was staying in an Airbnb in Miami and January and was headed to sleep when he discovered two hidden cameras facing the bed.

At first glance the devices seemed to be phone chargers - but upon a closer look, he realized they were cameras and they were recording.

Vest got dressed, grabbed his belongings and bolted from the home – taking the cameras' memory cards as evidence.

'I didn’t know if I was being watched live. What I’ve found since is that [the cameras] record to a memory card, but they can also stream live. The host could’ve been watching. Anybody could have been watching,' Vest said to the magazine.

While the company refunded Vest’s money and paid for him to have a hotel room for the night, Vest says that Airbnb still made many mistakes in advertising the site online.

The Miami rental owner named Ralph eventually had his rental removed from the website.

Vest has now retained counsel and is considering filing a civil suit against Airbnb under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, claiming the start-up should have taken down the host sooner after the hidden camera incident.

Vest also alleges Airbnb mistreated him during the investigation and should have supported him more. He says he was treated as a frustrated guest rather than a victim of a crime.

'This wasn’t [just] a negative experience. This was a criminal act,' Vest said, adding he filed a police report and an investigation is currently taking place.

Airbnb said that they’re taking the case 'extremely seriously' and that guest safety is a 'top priority'.

'The safety of our community—both online and offline—is our priority, which is why we take reports of privacy violations very seriously and employ sophisticated technologies to help prevent bad actors from using our platform in the first place,' the outlet added.

Airbnb says it tries to maintain safety by background checking hosts with cameras by sex-offender and felony databases, according to Airbnb’s Trust & Safety communications department.

Still, the hidden camera incidents continue to surface.

'There have been super terrible examples of privacy violations by AirBnB hosts, e.g., people have found cameras hidden in alarm clocks in their bedrooms,'  Jeff Bigham, a computer-science professor at Carnegie Mellon said.

Bigham found a hidden camera in his rental that the host failed to disclose and says Airbnb twice refused to refund him. Once he wrote a viral blog post about the ordeal, he got his money back and an apology.

'I feel like our experience is in some ways more insidious. If you find a truly hidden camera in your bedroom or bathroom, Airbnb will support you. If you find an undisclosed camera in the private living room, Airbnb will not support you,' Bigham added.

Airbnb said in a statement: 'We have apologized to Mr. Bigham and fully refunded him for his stay. We require hosts to clearly disclose any security cameras in writing on their listings and we have strict standards governing surveillance devices in listings. This host has been removed from our community.'

Fitness blogger Noelle De Guzman, from Manila, reported finding cameras hidden in her Airbnb as she traveled with her family over New Years. But when she reported it, the company told her to reach out to the host to clarify whether those cameras were in use – a violation of the company’s own policy.

Alfie Day also reported finding a camera in his Airbnb living room in Bulgaria. He works in IT and ran a Nmap scan on the camera and learned it was a special type of camera that could be remotely controlled to pan, tilt and zoom in on any subject, meaning it could follow guests from room to room.

It also had a high-capacity storage system and could share large files very quickly across the same network.

In 2015, Airbnb settled a civil lawsuit by a German woman who discovered hidden cameras in her California rental in 2013. She argues that she fears 'images of her exist in electronic form and could make their way onto the Internet or some other medium'.

While the $31billion company is still booming, it's struggling to find a way to crack down on hosts who record guests and appropriately dealing with the victim guests who come forward.

Given that the company is part of the 'sharing' business and works as a middleman between hosts and gusts, Airbnb is struggling to enforce laws and accurately respond when mistakes are made.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
