Britain's oldest police officer has won praise after arresting a suspect after a high speed pursuit and a chase on foot.

Special constable Keith Smith, 74, took down 29-year-old suspect Paul Tait after a dramatic chase through residential gardens in Benfleet, Essex on Tuesday this week.

SC Smith was driving a marked police car when he attempted to stop a driver near the town.

But the driver sped off and SC Smith was forced into a high-speed chase.

After following the speeding car for miles, the suspect jumped out and attempted to flee through several gardens.

SC Smith didn't give up the chase and managed to catch up with the suspect and detain him.

The force's road policing unit tweeted: 'Despite being 74 years old he engaged in not only the pursuit but a foot chase, detaining the suspect in the gardens of a nearby house.'

Essex Police Chief Constable BJ Harrington hailed SC Smith as an 'inspiration to us all'.

SC Smith has dedicated the last 20 years to fighting crime with Essex Police and has given up 2,000 hours in voluntary work in the last year alone.

It's not the first time the veteran policeman has hit the headlines, however.

He was praised last August after helping an elderly driver who fell ill at the wheel.

Paul Tait, 29, of no fixed address, has been charged with driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failure to stop and harassment.

He is due before Southend magistrates today.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
