«Breaking News» Family of youngest Thousand Oaks massacre victim say it's not about gun control

The family of 18-yer-old Alaina Housley - the youngest of the 12 victims gunned down at a bar in Southern California last week - have called into question the notion that gun control is the cure for America ‘a mass-shooting epidemic.

Housley, a student at Pepperdine University with plans to study law, was killed at the Borderline Bar and Grill where she had gone line dancing with friends when police said 28-year-old Ian David Long, a troubled US Marine combat veteran, opened fire on Wednesday night.

Long, who may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his time serving in Afghanistan, shot up the Western-themed bar using a .45 caliber Glock handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine, which he then turned on himself.

Alaina's father, Arik Housley, her uncle Adam, a former Fox News correspondent, and her aunt Tamara Mowry-Housley, the star of the 1990s sitcom Sister Sister, sat down with CBS News for an interview on Sunday, as hundreds of mourners lined up the streets of Napa for a somber procession welcoming home the body of the slain college student.

Many people on the left have renewed calls for tighter restrictions on gun ownership in the wake of the latest mass shooting, but Adam Housley suggested that invoking gun control would have a chilling effect on the ongoing conversation about gun violence.

‘And we don't want the conversation to end,’ said Tamera.

Arik Housley argued that his daughter's legacy goes beyond politics: the message they are now trying to spread revolves around human decency and kindness.

‘It's not about gun control; this message is about doing something bigger, to be with your community, to love one another,’ he said.

Alaina’s father speculated that if someone were to reach out to Long and ask him how he was doing, it might have changed his mind about turning to violence.

Adam chimed in: ‘To get to the point where we can have a conversation about anything political, it has to start here [points to heart]. It has to start with the soul, because we've lost that.’

The former Fox News reporter also revealed that trolls have been tweeting vile comments at him, saying he deserved to lose his niece because of where he worked.

The family said watching hundreds of strangers from different walks of life hold hands and hug each other along the route of Sunday's procession returning Alaina’s body home was edifying and inspiring.

‘She'd want that to happen at the national level,’ said her uncle, referring to the show of unity.

Some friends who came out to honor Alaina on Sunday talked about the need to pass more robust laws aimed at reducing gun violence in the US, while others echoed the sentiments of Housley's family members on the subject, arguing that legislation was not the answer, reported ABC7.

‘I think just showing compassion, love, empathy for other people is what we need to focus on doing,’ said long-time friend Gunnar De Young. ‘I don't know that there's any sort of legislation that we can impose, further than what we have, that'll solve the issue.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
