Lawyers for a New Jersey businessman charged with killing his brother's family say he loved his brother's wife like a sister and doted on their children.
They claim 51-year-old Paul Caneiro is wrongly charged in the deaths of younger brother Keith Caneiro, 50; his wife, Jennifer, 45; and their young son, Jesse, 11, and eight-year-old daughter, Sophia.
His defense lawyers said: 'He worked with his brother Keith for 31 years and he loved his sister-in-law as if she was his sister.
'Paul Caneiro participated in the lives of Jesse and Sophia from watching them at their various events at school and spending time with them frequently.'

Paul Caneiro, 51, (left) was charged on Thursday with the murders of his 50-year-old brother Keith, Keith's 45-year-old wife Jennifer and their children, Sophia, eight, and Jesse, 11 (right)
They claimed his family meant the world to Paul and that the truth would come out, in the statement obtained by NJ.com.
Their statement stated, 'Paul Caneiro just couldn't say no to his family.'
But Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni described 'the most brutal crime' he had ever seen yesterday; Keith was shot on the lawn of his Colts Neck mansion, his wife was shot and stabbed, and their children were repeatedly stabbed.
Police say Paul burned the millionaire's mansion and then returned home to torch his own house, in a botched effort to make it appear like someone had it in for their family.

Keith, 50, was found outside the house and he had been shot at least twice; his wife Jennifer, 45, had been shot and stabbed
Paul (left) is the older of the two brothers by a year but he worked for Keith (right with his son when he was a baby)
The brothers were business partners who formed their technology company, Square One, together in 1987.
At the time it was called Jay-Martin and specialized in computer installing but it grew in success and size as the internet boomed.
Keith started it and brought his older brother in as his first hire when he earned contracts with Citibank and at the Statue of Liberty.
According to The New York Times, their decades-long business brotherhood had come under recent tension.
A friend of Keith's, Brian Bott, said that Keith was excited after completing his master's degree this year and was exploring a new career path.
Police sources cited by NJ.com also said the business was struggling to stay afloat.
Gramiccioni said a financial motive stemmed from two businesses the brothers ran in Asbury Park, a technology firm and a pest control company.
Prosecutors say Paul (right after a car accident which gave him a limp) set fire to his home using gasoline while his wife Susan, (center left) and daughters Marissa, 23, (second from right) and Katelyn, 26, (left) were inside
The two houses are 12 miles apart; there were just over seven hours between the two fires
Paul arrived at his brother's house early in the morning - police could not say whether Keith's family were awake at the time of the alleged attack.
After allegedly killing them, Paul went to basement of the house where prosecutors say he set a fire.
They say he then left the house, leaving the fire smoldering, and returned to his own home where he set another fire using cans of gasoline. He survived that fire along with his wife and their two adult daughters.
The blaze at Keith's house was not reported until 12.38pm and police say it was fed for several hours by oxygen blowing through the house.
'It continued to smolder until there was entry made into the home, a great deal of oxygen coming into the home effectively fed that fire.
'(The fire) wasn’t reported until 12:38, what we believed caused the fire to catch on from there is the feeding of oxygen once the house was entered into,' Gramiccioni said.
Paul Caneiro is charged with four counts of murder among arson and weapons charges.
He is due in court this morning.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
