«Breaking News» NC teachers who carry concealed guns in schools would get pay raises under new proposed law

Teachers in North Carolina could get a pay rise if they carry concealed guns in the classroom under proposed new school self-defense legislation.

The proposed law known as the School Sanctuary Act of 2019 would set aside $9.3 million for qualifying volunteer teachers to undergo proper firearms training.

It would also add a five percent raise to their annual salaries for potentially putting themselves at risk.

The controversial idea was proposed by President Trump last year in the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting that left 17 people dead in Parkland, Florida on February 14.

N.C. State Rep. Larry Pittman, the Republican who sponsored the School Sanctuary bill, noted during a Wednesday press conference that 20 states have already adopted measures similar to the one he's proposing.

Last year, Pittman said he introduced the School Self Defense Act in the state general assembly, but his fellow lawmakers killed the initiative in committee.

'This is a failure to act that I fear may one day cost lives that could have been saved,' Pittman said.

Retired teacher and Marine veteran Jean Fitzsimmons said there are many North Carolina teachers who would want to be armed, but aren't currently permitted to be under state law.

If passed, the School Sanctuary Act of 2019 would grant teachers with concealed carry permits and proper training the right to bring their firearms to school on a volunteer basis to prevent school shootings like the one that occurred at Butler High School in Charlotte, N.C. on Nov. 3, 2018.

But March 2018 Elon University poll found that only 25 percent of North Carolina teachers surveyed said 'yes' or 'maybe' when asked if they'd carry a gun in their classroom if they were allowed to do so.

Seventy five percent of public school teachers who participated expressed that arming teachers was 'a bad idea,' the study authors noted.

'If I'm sitting there between the door closed at the moment and my students, and there's somebody outside of the door with a firearm that wants to kill them, I want to be armed,' Fitzsimmons said. 'I do not want to be like the football coach at Parkland who gave up his life just to shield his students momentarily before he was gunned down.'

Fitzsimmons was referring to the late coach Aaron Feis, who was fatally while protecting his students during the Parkland shooting a year ago.

The proposed bill is being introduced about four months after Bobby McKeithen, 16, was fatally shot by a classmate at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, a suburb about 27 miles southeast of Charlotte.

Those who oppose arming teachers have argued it not only puts the educators at undo risk, it also can lead to accidental shootings of students, particularly students of color.

Black children in particular made up 25.7 percent of students in North Carolina public schools during the fall of 2015.

A 2014 U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights study found that black students made up just 16 percent of public school enrollment nationwide, but represented 27 percent of students referred to law enforcement and 31% of students subjected to a school-related arrest.

Morgan State University professor Stacy Patton, who studies racial bias in education, noted in a 2018 Washington Post article that arming teachers could lead to more armed confrontations with students of color. 

'Putting guns into the hands of schoolteachers would be extraordinarily dangerous for black and Latino students, who are already often forced to try to learn in hostile environments where they’re treated as threats,' Patton wrote. 

Mark Jewell, president of the N.C. Association of Educators, said Wednesday his  group would oppose any attempts to arm teachers.

'It is a disaster waiting to happen,' Jewell said. 'Arm us with the resources we need to teach our kids to be safe.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
