The mother of a woman who was stabbed to death in December allegedly by her husband and stepdaughter has said she knew their story that she'd been killed by a panhandler was 'phony'.

Jacquelyn Smith, 54, was killed in December last year in Baltimore, Maryland.

Her husband Keith told police that she was attacked by a panhandler who lunged at her after she rolled down her passenger seat window in their car to give her $10.

Keith said his daughter, Valeria Smith, 28, was also in the car and that the three of the them were coming home from dinner. He drove her to the hospital but she was pronounced dead.

On Monday, they were charged with Jacquelyn's murder and for lying to the police.

Police arrested them near the border in Texas and say they were planning on fleeing the country.

Investigators have not yet suggested what their motive might be for the alleged killing.

On Tuesday, Jacquelyn's mother Anna Trisvane reacted to news of their arrests with relief.

She said their story did not add up from the beginning because her daughter was a cautious woman who would not have given money to a person in the street in the way Keith claimed she had.

'It was all phony. I knew it was not real. I suspected that he had something to do with it,' she told WBALTV.

Keith told officers that the female panhandler was pretending to hold a baby and that she were holding up a sign asking for money for food.

He claimed his goodhearted wife was so touched that she asked him to stop the car and let her roll down the window to help her, something her mother says has always sounded unlikely to her.

'She was too cautious. She doesn't like things like that. 'She would have said to herself, "No that's phony,"' Trisvane said.

Jacquelyn and her husband had been married less than five years. Her mother said she had never met his daughter and went two years without seeing her not long before her death.

'She was a good, good person. She liked everybody. She was just a good persona and she believed in God a lot,' she said.

Keith claimed his wife  had her necklace snatched from her neck and her purse stolen by the beggar

The last time she spoke to her daughter's husband was at her funeral where she told him: 'I gave you a beautiful daughter and you let her die like that, I know she didn't deserve to die the way she died.'

Keith told police that when his wife rolled down her window to give the beggar some money, a man appeared out of nowhere, grabbed her necklace and purse, stabbed her repeatedly then fled.

He said he and his wife had been dancing to their wedding song, John Legend's 'All of Me', hours earlier and played the part of a grieving husband.

He spoke to news crews outside his wife's funeral and consoled his own daughter who wept in front of the cameras.

'They took my wife's life. I hope it was worth it because you're going to answer to that one day,' he said in one interview.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
