Essential oil hawkers on social media have claimed that the scented plant oils can work all sorts of wonders — but now one company is coming under fire after at least one seller claimed the products could help in cases of physical abuse.
On Thursday, a Redditor shared a photo of a guidebook with instructions for using Young Living Essential Oils to combat different types of abuse and violence.
The booklet advises customers to apply drops of different oils from the brand in cases of sexual abuse, spousal abuse, and even thoughts of suicide — advice that many people are slamming as 'vile,' 'alarming,' and 'dangerous.'

Serious business: A reference guide for essential oils by the brand Young Living advocates for using them in various cases of abuse and suicidal thoughts
The page comes out of a reference guide for using essential oils made by the brand Young Living.
Young Living is a multi-level marketing company (MLM), which relies on independent sellers to push products and work on commission while recruiting new sellers.
The guide includes specific instructions detailing which of the brand's different oils to use in various cases of abuse.
It recommends applying one to three drops of various oils for physical abuse, parental abuse, sexual abuse, ritual abuse, spousal abuse, and thoughts of suicide.
Some of the oil names include Trauma Life, Forgiveness, Release, Joy, Surrender, Common Sense, and Harmony.
Though the guide does not explicitly say that the oils will fix or stop abuse, the implication appears to be that using them will help people better cope with abuse.
And this, many Redditors have said, is problematic.
'So while I'm being physically assaulted, am I supposed to rub the oil on myself as a deterrent, or sling it into the eyes of my abuser? Because a roller ball to the eye socket would probably be pretty beneficial, and I hope to god that is what they are saying,' wrote one.
'How frighteningly dangerous these vultures are,' wrote another, while a third chimed in: 'Omg that's vile. Those people are f***ing lunatics.'
'What I find more alarming than these false claims, is that people actually believe this,' yet another commented.
There is little to no scientific evidence to back up most of the therapeutic claims made by companies like Young Living about the efficacy of essential oils.
In fact, the Los Angeles Times points out that the Food and Drug Administration has been cracking down on unsupported health claims made by these companies.

Claims: The guide recommends using an oil called 'Trauma Life' (left) when suffering sexual, parental, or physical abuse, and 'Forgiveness' (right) when being abused

Not from them: The company told DailyMail.com that the guide was not published by Young Living and is also not distributed by the company
WebMD even warns users to beware of medical dangers like rashes and welts on the skin.
Plus, the word 'essential' in essential oils also doesn't come from how necessary they are; rather, it refers to the oil being from the concentrated essence of a plant.
Some Redditors also took issue not just with the claims the booklet seems to be making, but that abuse victims should seek 'forgiveness,' the name of one of the oils recommended.
'If I was suffering from physical abuse, I think the last oil I'd use would be forgiveness,' wrote one.
'The astounding ignorance of using an oil called "forgiveness" for spousal abuse makes me want to scream. My ex boyfriend abused me for six long years of hell. I will never forgive him,' wrote another.
Young Living does not explicitly recommend its oils for the uses listed above on its website, though it does suggest one for 'difficult or emotional times' and another for 'support during difficult emotional exploration.'
And the company told DailyMail.com that the booklet was neither made nor distributed by the company, but rather a third party.
'No, the recommendations [in the pictured reference guide] are not recommendations from Young Living and the third party publication is not distributed or sold through Young Living to members,' a spokesperson said in a statement.
'While we believe that essential oils are a powerful tool in the support of wellness, Young Living does not diagnose, cure, or treat any diseases or ailment.
'We not only encourage, but implore those who feel they may have mental or physical health issues to consult a medical professional immediately.'

Yikes: Other sellers have made similar claims on Facebook for Young Living and other oil products

Yikes: A Redditor shared this exchange in which a seller for an unnamed brand lectured a woman mourning the death of someone dear to try essential oils or 'stop complaining'
But while the company officially denies recommending essential oils for abuse and thoughts of suicide, several of its sellers on Facebook have claimed that the oils can help in these cases.
'I have been on antidepressants for over a year,' wrote one woman on Facebook named Meg Ellis. 'And this oil has done more for me than my medication at times. its crazy how this small bottle of oil has changed my life!'
Another named Maci DiRan Edwards replied to a post about battling addiction, depression, and suicidal behavior with: 'Know what could help with these? Oils ... Young Living Essential Oils they can ease the mind & help with mental health. Message me.'
The page @lifechangingoils has a post that reads: 'One lady even told me how a friend opened up to her about feeling suicidal and she put one of Young Living's blends — I think it was StressAway — on the back of her friend's neck.
'As she was telling me this, she snapped her fingers and said, "Like that (put the snap here) she felt fine! All those feelings were gone!"'
It's not only Young Living sellers who have claimed these benefits, either.
In a Facebook exchanged shared by another Redditor, a woman selling an unnamed brand of essential oils in the UK claimed her product would 'turn your life around!'
'I gave some to a friend who has serious depression [and] suicidal thoughts, [and] they snapped right out of it, no more negative thoughts!'
Another seller for an unnamed brand lectured a woman mourning the death of someone dear to try essential oils or 'stop complaining'.
'I have said before that we have a grief blend of oils but you don't seem to care that much,' she lectured.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
