«Breaking News» BAFTA nominations 2019: Emily Blunt's snub for Best Actress shocks film fans

The 2019 BAFTA nominations were announced on Wednesday morning, but among the jubilation were some shock results for film fans.

Emily Blunt missed out on a Leading Actress nod for her performance in Mary Poppins Returns, despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination and praise from critics for her take on the iconic character.

Fans pointed out that Emily, who has also been picking up accolades for A Quiet Place, previously received BAFTA nominations for the critically panned The Girl On A Train and her brilliant but arguably brief performance in The Devil Wears Prada.

In fact, Mary Poppins Returns only received nominations in the technical categories for BAFTA, with three nods in total for Best Film Music, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Emily was expected to compete in the Leading Actress category for the awards on her home turf, but instead Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Glenn Close (The Wife), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Viola Davis (Widows) will go head to head on February 10.

The BAFTA snub is a huge shock as up until now Emily has been included in all the major 2019 awards nominations, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards (where she received a double nod for Mary Poppins and A Quiet Place) and Critics Choice.

'Emily was nominated for THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN but not for MARY F*CKING POPPINS or A QUIET PLACE???? lol bafta's are bulls**t and i'm tired,' tweeted one outraged fan.

Another agreed, penning: 'The Emily Blunt #EEBAFTAs snub is really weird, given BAFTA have nominated her before, for THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN (which was not even a good film). How could they not love her singing as Mary Poppins?!'

'Emily Blunt at SAG: 2 - Emily Blunt at #BAFTA: 0... who saw that coming?' added another.

Up for a BAFTA: Instead of Emily, fans were pleasantly surprised to see Viola Davis (left) for Widows in the Leading Actress category, after she was left out of the Golden Globes

Instead of Emily, fans were pleasantly surprised to see Viola Davis for Widows in the Leading Actress category, after she was left out of the Golden Globes for Steve McQueen's movie.

But Davis' nomination is the sole chance for Widows at the BAFTAs, making it the first time a McQueen film hasn't been nominated in the Best Film category at the awards.

Mary Queen of Scots star and four-time Bafta nominee Saoirse Ronan was another surprising omission from the Best Actress shortlist, but her co-star Margot Robbie did earn a spot for Best Supporting Actress.

If Beale Street Could Talk’s Regina King missed out too, as despite being favourite for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar she wasn't shortlisted in the same category for the British awards.

Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role in The Favourite at the Golden Globes this weekend and now she’s been nominated for a BAFTA, can her year get any better? Well, she’s already made it a stylish one with this stunning ensemble.

On the red carpet Olivia wowed in a classic black cape gown by Stella McCartney, which featured crystal embellished fishnet fabric at the neckline and on the sleeves. Add in some Gina shoes, a Jimmy Choo clutch bag and jewellery by David Morris, and it was utter perfection.

We love the dramatic split sleeves on this design. The mesh detailing can be found on the label's 'Naomi' dress (click right), but unfortunately for any fans of this look, it was custom made just for Olivia so isn't available to buy.

But since when would Fashion Finder let a little thing like that get in the way of a shopping spree? So with Olivia's winning awards style in mind, check out the lookalike options in our edit below. This Norma Kamali number would knock their socks off at your next black tie event!

Bohemian Rhapsody yet again provided another shock during the 2019 awards season, this time for its lack of nomination in the BAFTA Best Film category.

Queen Olivia’s a Bafta Favourite

She was the toast of the Golden Globes as she won a best actress prize at the LA ceremony on Sunday.

Now Olivia Colman, 44, could recreate her success on this side of the Atlantic after her film The Favourite received an impressive 12 Bafta nominations yesterday.

The bawdy royal comedy features in categories including best film, best director and best actress for Miss Colman’s portrayal of Queen Anne.

Her co-stars Emma Stone, 30, and Rachel Weisz, 48, were nominated for their supporting roles, while other nominations for the film include original screenplay, cinematography, and production and costume design.

Miss Colman faces competition from Glenn Close for The Wife, Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Viola Davis for Widows. Best actor nominees include Christian Bale as former US vice president Dick Cheney in Vice and Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Both men won Golden Globes at the weekend.

Steve Coogan is nominated for his role as Stan Laurel in Stan And Ollie, along with Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born and Viggo Mortensen for Green Book.

Claire Foy received her first Bafta film nomination for her supporting role in Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

But box office hit Mary Poppins Returns was snubbed in every major category, with no best film nod and no best actress nomination for star Emily Blunt, who had been nominated for a Golden Globe.

The Baftas will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on February 10.

The snub comes just days after the Queen's biopic's surprise wins at Sunday's Golden Globes which saw it beat bookies favourite A Star Is Born to Best Motion Picture Drama while leading man Rami Malek won Best Actor for his performance as Freddie Mercury.

Instead The Favourite will compete with A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book and Roma for BAFTA Best Film.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s Queen Anne romp The Favourite has swept the board with 12 nominations in top categories including a Best Actress nod for its star Olivia Colman, and Supporting Actress nominations for Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

It will be interesting to see if the movie can translate those nominations to wins though, as it only managed to pick up one Golden Globe out of a possible five on Sunday night - Olivia's Best Actress win.

It's biggest competitors, A Star is Born, the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man and  Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma are all on seven BAFTA nominations.

Audience and critical hit Black Panther, which has been widely tipped to get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, failed to earn any major nominations, instead receiving just one nod for visual effects.

The BAFTAs limit each category shortlist to just five nominations, while the Oscars Best Picture category allows up to ten films to be included, which could mean Black Panther still has a good shot at a chance at the Oscar top prize.

Another box office smash, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was omitted from the BAFTA nominations despite being considered a strong contender to be included in the Outstanding British Film category.

The 2019 BAFTAs take place on February 10 at London's Royal Albert Hall in a ceremony hosted by Joanna Lumley.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
