President Donald Trump says a theme of his State of the Union address will be 'unity' — and he will praise Republicans for sticking by him over the course of his last year in office.
Trump said Thursday, after he was asked what his message would be, that his Feb. 5 speech would cover quite a bit of territory.
'I think it’s unification, I think it’s industry, I think it’s about the people that you see right here,' he said, after commenting on the rebuttal that Democrat Stacey Abrams will give.
He said that he has 'respect' for the former gubernatorial candidate he called 'not qualified' last year as he tried to bring her down.
Trump quickly pivoted to an attack on Democrats for refusing his pleas for a border wall and then back to the topic of unity in the next sentence as he gave reporters their first look at next Tuesday's remarks.
'The problem is the Democrats, you know when they say, we don't want to build, as an example, we don't want to build a wall, because it doesn't work or because it's immoral,' he charged.
Bringing up House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's claim that a wall is 'immoral,' he said that allowing Americans to die at the hand of violent immigrants is also unacceptable.
'Well it's also immoral, the people that come into our country that shouldn't be here and kill people. That's immoral, too. That's a lot more immoral,' he claimed with no build-up.
He added, as he got back on topic: 'But I really think it's going to be a speech that is going to cover a lot of territory but part of it is going to be unity.'
Democrats will have their chance to respond to Trump's speech, and they have designated Abrams as their official representative.
'I respect her. I don't know her. I haven't met her, but I hope she does a good job,' Trump said of the Democratic politician.
He mentioned that he doesn't the Georgian who he worked to to keep out of office on a personal level.
'I campaigned against Stacey Abrams, I know that President Obama campaigned for her. Michelle Obama campaigned for her, and Oprah campaigned for her, and all Brian [Kemp] had was me, and he won fairly easily, you know fairly easily. So, I hope that she does a good job.'
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Abrams would give the Democratic response to Trump's speech almost as quickly as the revised date of the address was nailed down.
'She is just a great spokesperson. She's an incredible leader. She has led the charge for voting rights, which is at the root of just about everything else,' he told reporters in the Capitol. 'I'm very excited that she's agreed to be the respondent to the president.'
He said he called her three weeks ago to ask her. 'I was delighted when she agreed,' he noted.
Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address next Tuesday
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced Abrams as the speaker on Tuesday; he's been courting her to run for the Senate
Abrams said she was 'delighted' to have been chosen
Abrams responded on Twitter she was 'delighted' to have been chosen by Congressional leaders to respond.
'At a moment when our nation needs to hear from leaders who can unite for a common purpose, I am honored to be delivering the Democratic State of the Union response,' she wrote.
In picking Abrams, Schumer intends to highligh disenfranchised voters, an issue Democrats will push in the 2020 presidential race and was a huge topic in Abrams' gubernatorial contest.
The Senate leader has also been wooing Abrams to join the upper chamber and has encouraged her to seek federal office next year.
Abrams' selection meant that Schumer did not have have to play favorites among senators from his party seeking the Democratic nomination or considering a run against the president: Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar were seemingly ruled out on those grounds.
Three weeks ago, when Schumer said he made his offer, Speaker Nancy Pelosi had invited Trump to give his address on Jan. 29. She later suggested he wait until the government reopened following a partial shutdown to give it.
After a week-long tussle up and down both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue, Trump agreed to wait. With the government up and running for the next few weeks, Pelosi invited Trump this week speak on Feb. 5.

Abrams garnered national attention in her bid to become the first female, African American governor of Georgia in a contest that went down to the wire.
Democratic star power flooded the state to support her, including Oprah Winfrey and former President Barack Obama.
Abrams lost to Kemp by 1 percent of the vote.
Her name is being floated as a challenger to Republican Sen. David Perdue next year with Senate Democrats courting her hard to join them. Democrats haven’t won a Senate race in Georgia since 2000.
Throughout her contest with Kemp, she accused the Georgia secretary of state's office of mismanaging the election. She charged that Kemp, then the secretary of state, was suppressing the minority vote.
She has since formed a voting rights organization, Fair Fight Georgia, that has filed a federal lawsuit against state elections officials, claiming they mismanaging the 2018 election. State officials have until the end of the month to respond.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
