A teacher at a £10,000-a-year Steiner school who allowed children to sit on his lap and massage him has been struck off.

Denis McCarthy, who taught at the school in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, for 34 years, shocked parent when he said he 'could make a lot money' by charging pupils to sit on him.

The 66-year-old also chased a girl around a playground, allowed students to massage his head and drew letters with his finger on another pupil's back.

The ex-teacher was known to stroke pupil's face and hair and defended giving hugs to pupils as 'wholesome' and 'grandfatherly'.

The Robert Steiner school was closed down last year over pupil safety fears and a string of damning Ofsted reports.

A disciplinary hearing ruled that the teacher had committed misconduct between 2009 and 2015 but cleared him of sexually-motivated misbehaviour.

One mother saw McCarthy touching her daughter's neck and 'drawing letters' on her back and she sat on his lap 'in a manner that seemed sensual', a hearing heard.

But McCarthy agreed that writing letters on her back was 'sensual' - because it was sensory learning.

Parents had became worried that their children were flirting with Mr McCarthy and one mother described schoolgirls as 'bees around a honeypot', the hearing heard.

It was claimed that parents who tried to report McCarthy were sent threatening legal letters.

Panel chair Martin Pilkington said: 'Mr McCarthy wanted the pupils to feel 'loved' by their teachers, in a similar way that their parents would love them.

'Mr McCarthy stated that there was nothing inappropriate in the contact that he had with pupils, both boys and girls, and this contact included allowing them to sit on his lap.

WHAT IS A STEINER SCHOOL?

Steiner schools, based on a system of education created by Austrian scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner, are renowned for encouraging creativity and imagination.

One of the best-known aspects of Steiner schooling is the philosophy that children under seven should not be taught to read or write.

Before that they express themselves through painting, modelling and music.

The first school opened in 1919 in Stuttgart.

There are now 958 worldwide, 35 in the UK.

In 2005 a study commissioned by the Department for Education concluded that Steiner schools had much to teach mainstream schools even though 'the consequences of successful Steiner education may take many years to unfold in a person's life'.

'This particular contact was, however, reduced as the pupils progressed towards puberty.'

McCarthy was found to have chased and picked up a schoolgirl the playground at break-time, before swinging her around.

But the teacher said he was simply playing with the children and had not acted inappropriately.

The panel ruled his behaviour was 'over and above what would be expected during a break-time'.

In June 2011, at a school summer fair, three pupils were seen sitting on McCarthy's lap and with their arms around his neck.

One mother raised concerns with the NSPCC when McCarthy joked that he 'could make a lot of money'.

In September 2013, at a fundraising event, McCarthy approached a pupil from behind and poked her waist- but he claimed he was just trying to be 'playful'.

At a carol-singing event in December 2013, McCarthy was seen putting his arm around a girl and letting her drape her head on his chest.

And on a camping trip in June 2014, he was seen stroking a pupil's cheek and tucking her hair behind her ear.

McCarthy was also found to have 'engulfed' another pupil with contact and stroked another schoolgirl's back.

The panel heard that one pupil told his mother about the hair-stroking, telling her: 'He should not be doing this mummy'.

McCarthy insisted that hair touching was not a 'big thing'.

He was also condemned for asking pupils to recite all the swear words they knew during an RE lesson.

Supporting the ban, Mr Pilkington said: 'It is not for a teacher to act as a surrogate parent and conduct that leads to such a relationship to develop is inappropriate and crosses the professional boundaries.'

He added: 'It is essential that teachers maintain professional and unambiguous boundaries between themselves and pupils at all times.

'Any blurring of these boundaries, even for the best reasons, can cause issues for pupils at the time and later.

'The panel was therefore satisfied that the conduct of Mr McCarthy amounted to misconduct of a serious nature which fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession.'

McCarthy was sacked from the school in January 2017. He has 28 days to appeal and cannot reapply to teach for at least three years.

He was cleared of allegations that he pushed a schoolgirl against a wall and pulled her leggings and underwear down.

Steiner schools, which are favoured by liberally-minded middle-class parents, base their curriculum on the spiritual philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
