«Breaking News» NBA commissioner says mental health is a growing concern as 'a lot of players are unhappy'

Money and fame don't always equal happiness for today's generation of NBA players, according to league commissioner Adam Silver.

The NBA boss's comments concerning the current state of players' mental health sparked debate over the causes and solutions to what Silver described as a 'generational issue' among athletes.

Speaking on a panel at the 13th annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston on Friday, Silver said one of his current top priorities is an ongoing initiative supporting players' mental health.

'When I meet with them, what surprises me is that they’re truly unhappy,’ Silver said. 'There are a few issues. One is a larger societal issue. We live a bit in the age of anxiety. Part of it is a direct product of social media.

'To the outside world, they see the fame the money all the trappings that go with it, [but] a lot of these young men are generally unhappy,' he added.

The commissioner's remarks come on the heels of reports of star players across the league struggling with feelings of sadness, isolation from teammates, and frustration with the scrutiny that comes with their stardom.

Boston Celtics shooting guard Kyrie Irving blamed the intensity of the modern media spotlight for his and other NBA stars' frustrations.

'I get tired of this stuff, just like everybody else,' Irving said after practice on Monday, according to the Boston Herald. 'It’s a constant battle, because media has gotten just outrageous, you know what I mean?

'The team’s success falls on the best player, and whether to call that fair or unfair, nobody should ever question what type of winner those guys are, you know, what type of winner I am or whether or not I have the team first mentality. It’s like nobody wants it to be solely about them, but we take most of the responsibility and so does the head coach.'

Irving referenced his former teammate and current L.A. Lakers star Lebron James, who has faced recent criticism for his latest team's struggles on the court.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said social media and intense media scrutiny of the modern era present a generational challenge for the league's stars like Lebron James (left) and DeMar DeRozan (right)

Some, including sports analyst Colin Cowherd, have questioned James' commitment to winning a championship in L.A. after losing three straight games and winning just three of their last ten games, during which James has been spotted playing off on defense.

Last year, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love and Toronto Raptors star DeMar DeRozan shocked many with stories of their own bouts with mental health challenges after DeRozan tweeted 'This depression get [sic] the best of me.'

'It's one of them things that no matter how indestructible we look like we are, we're all human at the end of the day,' DeRozan told reporters about his tweet.

'We all got feelings ... all of that. Sometimes ... it gets the best of you, where times everything in the whole world's on top of you... 'It's not nothing I'm against or ashamed of. Now, at my age, I understand how many people go through it.'

Silver noted that many NBA players tend to isolate themselves from their teammates, listening to headphones alone during bus and plane rides.

He also said fans and analysts who have expressed concerns about star players from different teams preferring to join forces through trades and free agency rather than defeating their rivals are mistaken.

'I think it’s less calculated than a lot of people think,’’ Silver said. 'The reality is that most don’t want to play together. There’s enormous jealousy amongst our players.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
