«Breaking News» Saturday Night Live: Gwyneth Paltrow pokes fun at Goop wellness empire in cameo

Just hours after hosting the Goop Health Summit in New York City, Gwyneth Paltrow made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live during Weekend Update.

The Weekend Update sketch started out being about the summit itself, showing featured SNL player Heidi Gardner playing bumbling Goop representative Baskin Johns, who had tons of trouble describing the products they sell.

After she makes it clear that if she screws up again Paltrow will fire her, she calls in her supervisor Fifer James, who is played by Paltrow, 46, herself.

The sketch begins with Baskin trying to explain the new Goop body wash, which is infused with ginger and something called 'oshuwaganda,' which Baskin has trouble describing.

A frazzled Baskin claims that oshuwaganda comes from Wakanda, the fictional African country from Black Panther, before admitting that she can't screw up again.

Her second strike means she has to move to Missouri, work at a Bed Bath & Beyond and grow out her roots.

To help her out, she asks Weekend Update co-host Michael Che if she can bring out Fifer James, because she's, 'really afraid that Gwyneth is gonna fire me.'

Fifer responds that Paltrow, 'doesn't believe in firing, remember, it's conscious unemploying.'

Fifer goes on to describe the new Himalayan salt scrub, adding, hesitantly, that it is the 'number one salt scrub.'

Fifer starts breaking down like Baskin did, before switching gears, saying she'd like to tell us what salt is instead.

When Che responds that he knows what salt is, Paltrow's Fifer says, 'So you know it's angry sugar?'

Both Baskin and Fifer try to stumble through their pitch together, but it doesn't go so well, as they both end by just saying 'Goop' a few times.

When Che asks what Goop even stands for, both Baskin and Fifer simultaneously respond with, 'Gwyneth Opens Our Paychecks.'

The Weekend Update segment ends with Baskin and Fifer crossing their arms like in Black Panther, proclaiming Oshuwaganda Forever!

The episode began with a cold open that parodied the controversial interview between Gayle King (Leslie Jones) and R. Kelly (Kenan Thompson).

The interview does not get off to a great start, with Kelly insisting King call him, 'victim,' which she refuses to do.

Throughout the interview, Kelly keeps saying things that indicate he's not too bright, such as, 'Maybe I can't read, or write, or math.'

He also doesn't think the interview is actually happening, but when King points out the cameras, he adds, 'Y'all just leave your cameras out in the open like that?'

After calling her the 'friend of Oprah' numerous times, Kelly ultimately learns that her name is actually Gayle King, and she is not the Jail King.

When they both try to say, 'Live from New York, it's Saturday Night,' Kelly turns the wrong way to look into the camera before King corrects him.

Actor Idris Elba made his SNL hosting debut, revealing during the cold open that he used to work just a few blocks from Studio 8H 20 years ago.

Before his acting career took off, Elba was a bouncer at the famed comedy club Caroline's on 49th and Broadway.

He added that his sister worked at Bad Boy Records and that she took him to a big memorial party for The Notorious B.I.G.

It was there, being in the same room with legends of rap, that inspired him to continue his acting carer, with that party taking place 22 years ago to this day.

The first sketch was a game show called Can I Play That, featuring three working actors, David (Elba), Jackie (Cecily Strong) and Lawrence (Beck Bennett) must figure out if they can play certain roles in upcoming movies.

The first round features a role that was ripped from the headlines, with Will Smith recently signing on to play Richard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams, in a biopic entitled King Richard.

The casting caused some mild controversy with some fans speaking out and saying Smith isn't dark-skinned enough to play Williams, which is addressed in the sketch.

When Jackie answers that Smith isn't black enough for the role, David asks if this is real, which leads to the host Denny Glans (Kenan Thompson) to state that the show is produced by Twitter, and all it takes is, 'One mistake and we'll kill you.'

Other revelations in this game include how no one can play Caitlyn Jenner in a biopic, and how recently Oscar winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) is the only person who can play Michael Jackson, because he can play anybody.

The game ends with a lightning round with the generalized characters they all can play, before a rather hilarious reference to the numerous rumors that Elba is being eyed to be the next James Bond.

The host says the final round will figure out if they can play James Bond, with Elba's David saying, 'Hey, I know the answer to that one,' with Glans responding, 'Do ya, though?'

After the sketch, they aired a fake commercial for a chicken place named Bok Bok, whose creepy mascot bears a striking resemblance to the internet meme Momo.

The next sketch features Elba and Mikey Day as reps from Microsoft teaching a few teams of two how to use Powerpoint.

While the first two teams (Alex Moffat/Leslie Jones and Chris Redd/Heidi Gardner) do just fine, the team of receptionists (Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon) hilariously fail each time out, causing them to lose control of their emotions.

The next sketch is a pre-taped parody of The Incredible Hulk, with Elba playing a version of Bruce Banner, who is turned into an, 'emboldened white lady whenever he's provoked,' becoming, 'The Impossible Hulk.'

Now Banner as this emboldened white lady starts calling the police after they become 'aggressive' before turning back to his normal self.

There is another scenario where Banner tries to get his neighbors (Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd) to keep quiet, when he transforms again.

Elba teams up with Thompson and Redd for another sketch called The GoldDiggers of the WNBA, as they try to pick up WNBA players.

Veteran 'gigolos' Terry Mack (Elba) and Lionel Hodges (Thompson) are seen showing Donnell, a.k.a. Young Buck (Redd) to the scene.

The sketch pokes fun at how little WNBA stars make ("60 to 90 G's a year"), with Pete Davidson making his first appearance of the night, playing a Nintendo Switch while sitting on the lap of his WNBA girlfriend.

Davidson made his presence known in an even bigger way on Weekend Update, where he spoke about separating art from the artist, in the wake of documentaries that exposed the sexual misconduct of Michael Jackson and R. Kelly.

He took a rather controversial stance that, those who support the Catholic church, with its history of sexual predators, the same as being an R. Kelly fan, which drew a mixed response from the crowd.

'I don't see the difference, only one's music is significantly better,' Davidson said, which drew more mixed reactions from the crowd.

He continued by saying the main reason people are so upset is because both R. Kelly and Michael Jackson made great music, adding he would have no problem removing Macklemore or John Mayer from his iPhone if they 'did some weird s**t.'

Davidson came up with a compromise of sorts, stating that the 'rule' should be they can listen to their music if they 'admit they're bad people,' while also donating to charity.

'Every time any of us listen to a song or watch a movie made by an accused sexual predator, you have to give a dollar to charity that helps sexual assault survivors,' he said. 'I've already donated $142. That's just from the "Ignition remix."'

While he didn't mention her by name, Davidson did address his new 'girlfriend situation' with actress Kate Beckinsale.

He mentioned how some people have a 'crazy fascination with our age difference,' since the 45-year-old Beckinsale is 20 years her boyfriend Davidson's senior, adding it doesn't bother them at all, before taking a hilarious swipe at the hypocrisy of said 'fascination.'

The back half of the episode featured a sketch with Elba playing an injured, not so bright soccer star who joins the broadcast booth with two seasoned announcers (Alex Moffat, Mikey Day) and says some rather inappropriate things.

Elba also stars as a magician named The Great Rudolpho in another sketch, where his magic show is all a ruse to kill the wife (Leslie Jones) of the casino owner (Kenan Thompson).

The final sketch features a group of young actors in L.A. (Moffat, Strong, Bryant, Bennett) who are trying to get a foothold in the industry, when they learn another friend (Elba) has landed a big role... which Bennet's character gets very jealous of.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
