«Breaking News» Israel pounds targets in Gaza following 'Hamas' rocket attack that struck a home

The Israeli military has pounded targets in Gaza and called up reserves along the border after a rocket attack on an Israeli home early this morning.

Witnesses and a security source in Gaza said there had been at least two strikes on a site belonging to Hamas's military wing in the west of the Gaza Strip.

The reported strikes rained down as Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu met US President Donald Trump in Washington. Netanyahu declared his men were 'responding forcefully' to 'wanton aggression.'

Before strikes began, Major Mika Lifshitz said two armoured and infantry brigades were mobilised and there was a limited drafting of reserves.

The rare long-distance missile was fired from the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Monday, 'demolishing' a house in central Israel and wounding seven people, according to reports.

The family home in Mishmeret, north of Tel Aviv, was left in ruins, with tiles, broken furniture and debris scattered about. A shattered baby's crib lay among the rubble and two family dogs died in the explosion.

'I nearly lost my family,' said Robert Wolf, grandfather of the injured residents. 'If we hadn't gotten to the bomb shelter in time, I would now be burying all my family.'

Israel believe it was a self-manufactured rocket made by Gaza's rulers Hamas, and had a range of about 75 miles.

A Hamas official denied the group was behind the rocket, suggesting it was caused by 'bad weather'.

Maj Lifshitz said the rocket was fired from a launching pad in the southern part of the coastal strip, near Rafah.

Trump expressed condolences for the rocket attack and said that the United States backs Israel's 'right to defend itself.'

The military quickly mobilized troops and called up reserves, setting the stage for a potential major conflagration shortly before Israel's upcoming elections.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said it treated seven people overall in the farming community of Mishmeret, including two women who were moderately wounded.

The others, including two children and an infant, had minor wounds.

The sounds of air raid sirens had jolted residents of the Sharon area, northeast of Tel Aviv, from their sleep shortly after 5am, sending many to their bomb shelters.

'It's a miracle that nobody got killed,' said Assi Dvilanski, a Magen David Adom paramedic who was one of the first responders at the scene.

Netanyahu held emergency consultations with military officials back in Israel and cancelled a planned address to the AIPAC conference.

'There has been a criminal attack on the State of Israel and we will respond forcefully,' he said. 'In a few hours I will meet with President Trump. I will return to Israel immediately afterward.'

Anticipating a strong Israeli response, Gaza's Hamas leaders have apparently gone underground.

Witnesses reported seeing Hamas evacuating its personnel from government premises.

Hamas also announced that its Gaza chief, Yehiya Sinwar, had cancelled a scheduled public speech. Israel also shut down its main crossings into Gaza and imposed restrictions on fishing off the Gazan coast.

Monday's attack came 10 days after rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel's densely populated commercial capital of Tel Aviv.

The Israeli military at the time struck back and the sides appeared to be moving toward another confrontation. But Gaza's Hamas leaders said the rocket was fired accidently and calm was quickly restored.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's attack, but it would seem to be much harder to dismiss the latest incident as another misfire.

A possible trigger could have been a prison riot late Sunday when Hamas-affiliated prisoners stabbed an Israeli guard in the neck in southern Israel.

Israeli guards moved in to subdue the rioters, wounding about a dozen prisoners, three of them seriously. In a statement, Hamas called for an end to the crackdown.

'We do not yet have a full understanding of who exactly ordered the firing of the rocket,' said Eran Lerman, a former deputy director at Israel's National Security Council.

'But clearly this is no longer something that can be explained away as a mistake or a technical failure.'

Gaza is controlled by Hamas, a militant Palestinian group that seeks Israel's destruction and possesses a large arsenal of rockets and missiles capable of striking deep inside Israel.

The territory is home to other Palestinian militant groups, including Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed armed organization that also has a rocket arsenal.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since the group seized power in the strip in 2007. Smaller flare-ups have occurred sporadically since Israel and Hamas fought their last war in 2014. Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all fire coming out of the coastal territory.

The outburst comes at a sensitive time for both sides. Israel is holding national elections in 15 days. Netanyahu, who also served as defense minister, is locked in a tight fight for re-election and has faced heavy criticism from his opponents for what they say has been an ineffective response to Gaza militants.

'The reality in which Hamas turned Israel into a hostage is unprecedented and unfathomable,' his chief challenger, Benny Gantz, wrote on Twitter on Monday.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
