«Breaking News» Woman, 28, sentenced to nearly six months in jail for posing as firefighter's wife to collect cash

A California woman who pretended to have a firefighter husband battling the Holy Hell wildfire in order to collect money has been sentenced to nearly six months in jail.

Ashley Bemis, 28, was arrested in December 2018 after police said she posted on Facebook that her partner, Shane Goodman, was battling the blaze to dupe people into sending cash.

Police were able to confirm that the wedding planner from San Clemente, who is also said to have faked at least three pregnancies, was not married to a firefighter and Goodman didn't even exist.

On Monday, Bemis was sentenced to 177 days in county jail.

According to the Los Angeles Times, she pleaded guilty on Friday to one count of grand theft and four counts of second-degree burglary.

She also pleaded guilty to six counts of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime and two dozen fraud counts.

Bemis was found out after she shared pictures of herself and 'Shane' online that caught the attention of a local fire captain who became suspicious and reported her to the authorities.

Another woman said Bemis - who allegedly wore prosthetics to simulate a growing belly - texted her that she was in a hospital and that the baby was 'stillborn'.

Authorities started investigating the scam last August.

Bemis bilked Good Samaritans out of more than $2,000 in donations she claimed would aid firefighters during the fire.

She had asked for donations of items like socks, sports drinks, water, and camping equipment.

In the Facebook post Bemis wrote: 'My Shane works for Cal Fire and is out on the Holy Fire right now. I also have two other family members and many friends out on this fire and other fires burning here in California.

'I received a text today from Shane saying it's pretty much a living hell out there battling the unpredictable "Holy Hell Fire."'

'I wanted to put it out there to everyone and say I will happily meet you and pick up any donation to the firefighters and first responders that are on the front lines right now.'

Bemis has reportedly faked at least three pregnancies since 2011. In 2011, Bemis allegedly faked a pregnancy by stuffing a pillow under her blouses. In this photo it appears that a baby's head can be seen peaking out from under the blanket

The Facebook post, which is also said to have included a list of four drop-off locations in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, was subsequently deleted.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department told ABC at the time: 'San Clemente Police Services investigators suspect that Bemis created the fictitious husband with the intention of soliciting donations to defraud victims.

'They also became aware, through additional social media posts from members of the community, of past fraudulent activity by Bemis, including multiple prior faked pregnancies in an attempt to illegally obtain money from unsuspecting victims.'

Bemis was charged with grand theft, second-degree burglary, witness intimidation and making false financial statements.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
