«Breaking News» Sian Williams discovers the truth about supermarket food

Sian Williams thought she knew about food.

A healthy eater since she was young, she believed she made informed decisions for her family at the supermarket.

But that’s all changed.

An investigation for her show, Secrets Of Your Supermarket Food, uncovered horrors in her weekly shop including sausages containing crushed insects, slices of ham with meat from up to 100 pigs, bogus farms on labels, germ-ridden chicken and bagged salads that are ‘bacterial soups’.

The three-part series started by looking at healthy choices and what’s in your bagged salad (the brown stuff you sometimes get in a corner is basically a mix of nasty bacteria), while this week it turns to meat, followed by convenience foods.

This examination of what’s behind the labels is fascinating, educational – and terrifying.

‘My husband said to me that since I made the show all I say is, “We can’t have this and we can’t have that,” but to me it’s about educating yourself and what you do with that education.

'I now get my meat from a butcher and I never buy bagged salads.’

Newsreader Sian, 54, who has presented 5 News At 5 since 2016, says she thought she was making the right choices about food as she recovered from the breast cancer she was diagnosed with four years ago.

‘I was always a green-tea-drinking healthy eater,’ she says.

‘It was one reason why I was so shocked to be told I had cancer – although I now know it’s more down to bad luck.

'But I thought I knew my stuff.

'To my shame I even wrote about healthy eating in my book Rise: Surviving And Thriving After Trauma.

'I’ve learnt so much from being on this show.’

Sian, who has a son, Seth, 12, and daughter, Evie, ten, with her husband, TV producer Paul Woolwich, and two grown-up sons from her first marriage, as well as stepdaughter Emily, 21, said one of her biggest shocks was how named ‘farms’ on supermarket labels were just marketing tricks.

Co-presenter Stefan Gates meets one farmer who’s had to change the name of his family farm, Woodside Farm, because Tesco launched a ‘Woodside Farm’ range.

Unlike the real Woodside Farm, the meat for the Tesco brand can come from abroad.

The benefit of the subterfuge quickly becomes obvious when some sausages are cooked for one of the families who help Sian and Stefan test the food in each episode.

‘I told them one batch came from the farm brand and the other was from the budget range, but in fact they were the same,’ recalls Sian.

‘They marked the farm-brand sausages higher and struggled to believe me when I told them they were the same.

'It shows the power of the mind.’

Pork sausages are dissected and it’s revealed they can contain less than 50 per cent pork – the legal minimum is 42 per cent.

Other ingredients include fat and red food colouring made from crushed cochineal insects, which are native to Latin America.

Even more astonishing was an investigation into ‘re-formed’ meat such as ham.

‘One person told us that your meat in products like ham can come from up to 100 different animals all stuck together with meat “glue”,’ says Sian.

‘When you look at the packaging, it might have three different places of origin and that becomes understandable when you know why.

'I will always buy ham carved from the bone now.’

Chicken – Britain’s most popular meat, with 20 million birds a week eaten – may be all from one country, but they aren’t that safe, the show discovers.

Of the supermarket birds tested, 40 per cent were infected with the bacteria campylobacter, the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK.

It’s almost enough to put you off your dinner.

‘Making this show has changed the way I shop,’ says Sian.

‘Even though I live in Kent – the garden of England – I wasn’t shopping in local butchers or greengrocers because of convenience.

'Now I do. The important thing is to learn.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
