«Breaking News» Shirley Ballas, 58, nearly DIED on Comic Relief Kilimanjaro climb

Shirley Ballas has revealed she came close to death whilst climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief

The Strictly Come Dancing judge was one of eight celebrities who scaled the  12,000 foot volcano in Tanzania, joining the likes of Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Love Island's Dani Dyer on the trek.

Yet the journey was far from smooth, as the 58-year-old dancer confessed that she suffered with such bad altitude sickness that she was left bleeding, vomiting and talking to dead relatives, whilst she also came close to falling off the side of the mountain.

Shirley's brother David committed suicide in 2003 whilst battling depression and the dancer confessed that she heard his voice spurring her on during the trek.

Recalling the experience to The Sun, she revealed: 'I was having panic attacks. My nose started to bleed. I was vomiting. And then my mind and senses lost control...

'One day when we were climbing really quite far up, because of the altitude I felt I could hear my brother talking to me.

'I was overwhelmed with how tired I was. You start to become disorientated. I felt I could hear my brother going, "Shirley". It was really strange. But I had to remember I was doing this for David and anybody who’s got mental health issues.'

As well as battling with altitude sickness, Shirley almost came close to death when she lost her footing on the mountainside.

She admitted that she was saved by fellow celebrity climber Osi Umenyiora, 37, a sports pundit and ex-NFL player who was forced to grab her by the neck and pull her back up to safety.

The 6ft 4in star also protected Shirley again when Ed Balls tripped and went rolling down the mountainside, stepping in her path so that the politician would hit him instead of sending Shirley flying.

Also on the climb were Broadcaster Anita Rani, BBC Breakfasts’ Dan Walker and Pointless host Alexander Armstrong.

Reports of the groups impressive climb revealed that several members of the group suffered with altitude sickness midway through the week.

With the terrain becoming more challenging, the only sign of life for the climbers was the odd stray buffalo.

The team hiked through the Alpine desert to Pofu Camp where they will be hoping to acclimatise after a tough few days of altitude sickness.

Suffering from migraines and sickness, Dani said: 'It is tiring, but I know I can do it. I won't let the altitude affect me. I'm going to try and overcome it as much as I can but all your donations mean so, so much to all of us.'

Jade, who has joined her bandmember Leigh-Anne on the expedition, revealed she has been battling sickness and a high temperature as they climb higher up the mountain.

She said: 'The last two hours have probably been the hardest. Last night I was really, really sick, vomiting, I felt nauseous, had a bad tummy and a high temperature, I'm not sure if it was a bug or the altitude.

'Been taking tablets, didn't sleep very well. Got a blister on my toe! It's just one thing after the other! Woke up this morning, feeling a lot better, everyone's in good spirits, and it's all worth it for this amazing cause.'

While some have experienced serious headaches and sickness, others have experienced less conventional symptoms.

All the drama will be followed up close and personal, with highs, lows, twists and turns and moments of delirium captured on camera by Shine TV, who are making a one-hour special documentary of the challenge, Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb.

The full story of how the group adjust to their basic camping conditions, new climbing companions, extreme temperatures and debilitating altitude sickness will be revealed on BBC One in the run up to Red Nose Day, which is on Friday 15th March.

All money raised will help Comic Relief fund projects in the UK and internationally.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
