«Breaking News» Rob Gronkowski announces he is stepping down from NFL after nine seasons and three Super Bowl rings

The New England Patriots tight end announced on Instagram on Sunday that he is retiring from the NFL after nine seasons.

The 29-year-old NFL superstar and perennial party boy gleefully known as 'Gronk' made the announcement in a heartfelt Instagram post alongside a photo of himself holding the Super Bowl trophy.

'It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today,' Gronkowski wrote on Instagram.

'I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last 9 years have been amazing both on and off the field. The people I have meet, the relationships I have built, the championships I have been apart of, I just want to thank the whole New England Patriots organization for every opportunity I have been giving and learning the great values of life that I can apply to mine.'

Gronkowski went on to thank the fans and his current and past teammates, noting 'I will truly miss you guys. Cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of whats next.'

The frequent Pro Bowl invitee and All-Pro star had dealt with multiple injuries throughout his NFL career, including injuries to his back, forearm, groin, spine and knees. Several of these injuries required surgery and kept him off the field. He also experienced several concussions.

During Gronkowski's nine season career, he missed 29 regular season games due to injuries, according to SB Nation

Gronkowski's teammates and famous friends were quick to react to Gronk's retirement news, taking to the comment section of his Instagram post as well as posting their own tributes.

'Love u man!! The [goat emoji]!! Couldn't be a better person or teammate,' Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wrote on Gronkowski's post.

He then posted his own commemorative photo, showing himself and Gronkowski having on-field tete-a-tete.

'What an honor and privledge [sic] to play with you these past nine years @gronk!' Brady wrote. 'You accomplished so much and our team was almost unbeatable when you were on the field! Your fun-loving, inspiring, and positive energy made an impact on everybody you came into contact with!

'Not just that, but for as great as a player you are, you are a better teammate and person. The NFL was a better place with you in it! But I have no doubt you will be a success in anything you do!!! Love you pal!' Brady concluded.

'Congrats on an incredible career,' Texans defensive end JJ Watt wrote. 'One of the best to ever do it. Best wishes on whatever comes next!'

'Enjoy retirement stud...' wrote Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones.

Gronk's Dunkin Donut ad co-star and retired Boston Red Sox David Ortiz wrote, 'Best TE ever..?? BIttersweet but I feel u bro. U know where to find me now. Congrats kid.'

'Words can't express how proud I am of you,' Gronk's girlfriend, Camille Kostek wrote. 'It has been an absolute thrill watching you perform like no other out on that field. You are the best that has ever played the game if you ask me! I love you with all my heart! I will be your biggest fan in all that you do!'

'Now you can come party in Vegas all year around!' wrote DJ Tiesto, no doubt in reference to Gronkowski's penchant for spending the off-season living it up with his friends in America's biggest party spots.

In recent years, the Madden NFL 17 cover boy has also spent his off-season establishing a film and TV career. He has appeared in episodes of Family Guy, Shark Tank and Drop the Mic, as well as playing a fictionalized version of himself in the Entourage film. He also co-hosted the Nickelodeon show, Crashletes, and helped tag an endangered shark in a Discovery Channel Shark Week program.

He is also a Tide spokesperson, who has filmed multiple commercials for the detergent brand, including some spot reminding people not to eat Tide pods.

Gronkowski routinely makes headlines for his traditional 'Summer of Gronk' shenanigan.

Most recently, on March 16, he popped in to Maham Yoga Studio to work on his downward facing dog, just one week after video emerged of the Patriots tight end showing off his 'drop it like it's hot' with girlfriend Camille Kotsek on a boat in Cabo San Lucas.

The 29-year-old Super Bowl champion traveled down to Mexico to celebrate Spring Break with the crowds of college co-eds, presumably as a guest of his significant other.

The New England-native is getting her time in the limelight now thanks to her appearance in the last year's Sport Illustrated Swimsuit issue, and with a spread in the upcoming issue looking to be close to a guarantee.

Kostek even joked on the trip that Gronkowski was now working as her 'content creator'.

The image of the 6ft 6in Gronkowski was posted on Saturday by a number of student in the class.

'What a way to start the morning! Thanks to @yogisusu for a killer class! Oh, and @Gronk in your class? Priceless!' wrote one man.

The best response however came from Omar Kelly, a journalist at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel who did not take the class, but was very close to a woman who did spend her Saturday with Gronkowski.

'So my wife goes to a hot yoga class on Saturday and she tells me that some football player was in the class. She says he was super stiff, but worked hard to get it right,' wrote Kelly on Twitter.

'I was like.... you remember his name? She was like NO, but I have a picture. Gronk’s training in Miami.'

He later gave an interview to Boston.com in which he revealed how clueless his wife was to the fact that a three-time Super Bowl champion was just a few feet away from her in class.

'They were positioned next to one another and talked crap all class about how the instructor was so hard and was trying to kill them,' said Kelly.

'She said he had a great personality. When I realized it was Gronk and told her he’s possibly one of the NFL’s top 10 players and most recognizable names she was shocked. This morning I pointed out he’s on the Cheerios box in our house.'

Kostek took to Instagram last week to address the cruel comments about her body that she received in response to a bikini-clad image she shared on social media.

'I can’t begin to explain how many rude comments I got after I posted this photo about my body. But for the women who I was able to help love who they are more from it, I post without hesitation for myself and for YOU,' she wrote.

In a series of videos, Kostek opened up about how her bikini photo 'sparked an uproar of opinions' about her body — both good and bad.

'I’ve been sitting on this for a few days, deciding if I was going to share this, and I decided that I’m going to share a little bit of the things that I had seen,' she said, before posting screengrabs of some of the nasty comments she received on social media.

One person called Camille's photo 'gross,' while another said she has 'the largest hip bones' he had ever seen.

'You should cover up,' someone else wrote.

This is not the first time that Gronkowski has been spotted doing yoga, having made a somewhat frequent part of his off-season routine for the past few years.

He has even stopped at Maham multiple times in the past, and even got his brothers involved in the practice.

Namaste.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
