«Breaking News» National Geographic Travel Photo Contest jaw-dropping snaps show Macau's changing skyline

If you think your travel snaps are worthy of being seen by more than just your social media followers this contest might be for you - but be warned, there's some stiff competition.

National Geographic has launched its travel photo contest once again this year, drawing talented photographers from across the globe.

Jaw-dropping pictures from this week's top entries show the contrast between the glitzy Grand Lisboa hotel in Macau and rundown neighbourhoods in the country, while others capture eagles soaring into the air as part of a traditional festival in Mongolia.

Both budding and established photographers are encouraged to enter the competition, which is split into three categories: nature, cities and people.

A grand prize of $7,500 (£5,700) is up for grabs, while first place winners in each of the groups will receive $2,500 (£1,900).

The competition opened on March 18 and National Geographic will be accepting submissions until May 31. You can read more about the competition and enter by clicking here

Participants in the annual Golden Eagle Festival, show off their skills. The festival is held in Bayan-Ölgii aimag, West Mongolia. The eagle hunters are celebrating their Kazakh heritage and compete to catch small animals such as rabbits and foxes. Eagle hunting has been practiced in Central Asia for thousands of years, although nowadays it is preserved only in the Kazakh culture where the traditions are still alive and well kept

As is known, the Colorado River is very shallow due to the active use of water from it for agricultural purposes. And when it reaches the ocean in Mexico it is almost dry. Aerial shot was taken from a Cessna

While lemurs are endemic to the island of Madagascar, even within the island there are diverse habitats which are home to a number of species of lemurs. The red-fronted brown lemur is found in south western part of the island, in its dry lowland forests. It feeds mostly on fruits, leaves, and flowers—often leaving the comfort of the trees in search of seeds

I was at the top deck of Skytree around noon—when I looked outside, I noticed the shadow of Skytree and the street intersecting like hands on a clock face. I was also amazed by how many homes are there under the Skytree

Aerial view of crab eater seals, while they are resting on the broken ice of the Antarctic Peninsula in December. It has been shown by studies that they have a general patter of feeding from duck until dawn and hauling in the middle of the day. Their patterns change with the season. Crabeater seals use a lot of the ice to rest between dives, as the ice melts more and more, their future might not be so bright despite the huge number of animals

This wild horse in Northern New Mexico was all by himself, walking towards the giant Shiprock formation. I really love this shot because it really conveys the scale of this place. Shiprock rises 1,500 ft. into the air, surrounded by nothing but barren, flat desert plains. Watching the horse walk in front of this beautiful formation was something I had to capture

On my last day in Antarctica, I was posting my last video update, I heard what I was waiting for and documented what was to come. A leopard seal was feeding on a penguin … I was in a 7mm free-diving suit to be more flexible to change positions quickly. A normal encounter would be 20 minutes or so and I wouldn't be too cold afterwards, but this day was different, as we swam with three different leopard seals—brrrr. I felt safe being so close to the action with my team. Just amazing

The Palkhi Festival showcases the distinctive feature of the Maharashtrian culture in India. Thousands of people called ‘Varkari’ reach Pandharpur from Alandi or Dehu after walking for about 250 km. The Palkhi offers some of the best cultural events of Maharashtra once in a year. This photo was taken when all the devotees were singing devotional songs by using an instrument called ‘Taal’ or ‘Manjira’ which is a set of small cymbals, which produce a clashing sound after contact with each other

Two groups of climbers make their descent from the icy slopes of Huayna Potosi. For many, this is their first 6,000 meter peak, resembling an achievement of a lifetime. For everyone, their respective mountain to climb is different, but mountains like this one are no stranger to changing the way your mind works. The moment of recognition of this growth of physical and more so emotional stature is one of the most raw, transcendent, and blissful moments in my life, which is captured here

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
