«Breaking News» Michael Jackson's radio airplay declines and sales drop in the U.S following Leaving Neverland doc

The airing of HBO's new documentary Leaving Neverland has affected the late star's music sales.

Jackson's combined album and song sales - including his work with the Jackson 5 and The Jacksons - dipped 4 percent overall in the U.S., reports  Billboard.

However in the UK, his music soared up the UK iTunes album chart.

In the U.S., Jackson's combined album and song sales - including his work with the Jackson 5 and The Jacksons - totaled nearly 8,000 from March 3-5, down from the little over 8,000 on the previous Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Feb. 24-26).

However, on-demand audio and video streams have apparently risen by half a percent apiece since the first two hours of the four-hour Neverland film debuted on HBO on Sunday, March 3, with the second two hours released to the network a day later.

The U.S. iTunes chart also saw Essential Michael Jackson re-enter the charts on Thursday at number 71, but it quickly dropped to 96 on Friday.

In the UK the singer's Number Ones album surged to number 27 by March 8, after being at number 91 on 26 February, before the documentary aired on Channel 4.

The Essential Michael Jackson also re-entered the UK top 100, charting at 76 on March 7, after last being seen inside the top 100 in November 2018.

Thriller has climbed to 133 and Bad to 142.

Meanwhile radio stations from Australia to Canada have taken the late popstar's music off rotation, in the shadow of the premiere of the shocking doc - which chronicles allegations of sexual abuse by Michael Jackson, according to initial Nielsen Music reports

Radio airplay dropped by 13 percent to 5,200 plays across all monitored U.S. terrestrial and satellite radio stations on March 3-5, from 6,000 on Feb. 24-26.

Leaving Neverland – which features two men, including Australian choreographer Wade Robson, 36, detailing explicit allegations of sexual abuse against the singer when they were children – has spectacularly re-cast Jackson's legacy since its premiere at Sundance in January.

Robson was five when he first met Jackson after winning a dance competition in Brisbane.

The Jackson family has denounced Leaving Neverland, saying: 'Michael always turned the other cheek, and we have always turned the other cheek when people have gone after members of our family — that is the Jackson way.

'But we can't just stand by while this public lynching goes on…. Michael is not here to defend himself, otherwise these allegations would not have been made.'

The family points out that Jackson was subjected to a thorough investigation which included a surprise raid of his home, the Neverland Ranch, but was still acquitted at his criminal trial in 2005, in a case involving another young man.

Mr Robson testified at that trial, saying he had slept in Jackson's room many times, but that Jackson had never molested him.

Last Sunday, 1.3 million viewers in the U.S. tuned in to HBO watch the explosive Dan Reed documentary, during its two-hour premiere.

In the U.K, the viewing figures were even higher. An average 2.1 million viewers tuned in for part one when it aired on Channel 4 on Wednesday, and 1.9 million people watched part two on Thursday.

The numbers are over double the usual audience for Channel 4 at 9 p.m., according to Variety.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
