«Breaking News» Mayor Pete Buttigieg surges to 3rd place in Iowa Democratic free-for-all

South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg has surged to third place in a new Iowa poll, making strides in a crowded field in the key primary state.

The 37-year-old Iraq and Afghanistan vet jumped to earn 11 per cent support in the latest Emerson poll of Democratic presidential candidates in Iowa. He trailed two vastly better known candidates: former Vice President Joe Biden, who hasn't yet entered the race, and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. 

Back in January, Buttigieg didn't even register in the poll, scoring 0 per cent. California Sen. Kamala Harris, who was at 18 per cent in January, saw her support drop to 10 per cent in the latest Emerson poll. 

In that poll, Sanders, who hadn't declared his candidacy at the time, was at 15 per cent.

Although South Bend's population barely tops 100,000, Buttigieg finds himself ahead of several senators with national contsituencies.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren was at 9 per cent, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker scored 6 per cent, and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke was at 5 per cent in the poll.       

Spencer Kimball, who directed the poll, called the showing by the politician who goes by 'Mayor Pete' was the 'biggest surprise' in the survey. 

'Last week we saw him inching up in our national poll, and now he's in double digits in Iowa, America is going to be asking who is 'Mayor Pete'?' he said.

Buttigieg got a burst of publicity off a strong performance in a CNN town hall. His campaign said he raised $600,000 after his performance.

At 37, Buttigieg is the youngest candidate in the Democratic race. The two poll leaders are in their 70s

In one notable moment, he blasted Indiana Gov. Mike Pence for his support for Trump despite the Stormy Daniels saga.

'How would he allow himself to become the cheerleader for the porn star presidency? Is it that he stopped believing in scripture when he started believing Donald Trump?' Buttigieg asked. 'I don't know. I don't know.' 

His unusual bio and Midwestern roots give him give him selling points in Iowa, where caucus-goers expect to get to know candidates through personal encounters.

Buttigieg is a Rhodes scholar who earned a degree from Harvard University, and serves as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserves.

If elected Buttigieg would be the first gay president.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
