The annual Battle of the Oranges has taken place in Italy with teams pelting each other with fruit during the three-day festival.
The tradition's origins are unclear but it is believed it dates back centuries.
Hundreds of people attend the event in Ivrea, a town in northern Italy near Turin.
It supposedly commemorates a 12th century uprising with oranges representing the head of their enemy.
A festival in Italy where people throw oranges at each other has taken place today. The annual Battle of the Oranges happens on the three days leading up to Shrove Tuesday
The festival takes place in Ivrea, a town near Turin in northern Italy. Thousands of orange throwers congregate for the local tradition
Oranges from Sicily and Calabria are brought up to Ivrea. It is estimated that more than a million oranges that would have been otherwise thrown away are used in the festival
The origin of the tradition is unclear but the townspeople divide into nine teams and castle defenders in the carts are the target for the orange throwers
According to legend, the town's evil lord attempted to rape a miller's daughter named Violetta on the eve of her wedding.
She then cut off his head and presented it to the townspeople who were then freed from the evil tyrant.
They stormed his castle and set fire to it.
Another version of the tradition's origin tells of the town's poor were given pots of beans by the feudal lords.
The Ace of Spades team's colours are red and blue with a black scarf. At the end of the festival, judges announce the winning team
The Chess team attack the castle defenders from their designated piazza. Spectators stand at the side wearing red hats so they don't get caught in the crossfire
The tradition is believed to commemorate an uprising by the townspeople over an evil lord in the 12th century
According to the legend, the evil lord tried to rape a young girl on the night before her wedding. She then cut off his head, starting the uprising
They threw the beans on the floor in protest at the miserly gesture and over time the beans were swapped for oranges.
The festival takes place every year on the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday.
A girl from Ivrea is chosen to play the part of Violetta and many wear traditional costumes.
People are divided into nine teams: the Ace of Spades, Death's Aranceri, Revolutionaries of the Borough, The Chess, Black Panther, Arduino's Scorpions, The Devils, The Mercenaries, and the Credendari.
The girl's name was Violetta and every year a local girl is chosen to play her at the festival. The town is adorned with flags representing the teams and the area they are protecting
The castle defenders wear helmets and pads and are the main target for the orange throwers. A team of 100 workers cleans up the oranges after the festival finishes on Tuesday
The horses are not supposed to be a target for the oranges but they are often caught in the crossfire. Members from the Arduino's Scorpions team wear their traditional yellow and green kit
There are 46 of the horse-drawn carriages who go round the piazzas in the town. The oranges are said to represent the head of the evil lord and the pulp is his blood
Another version of the festival's history says that poor people were so dissatisfied with being given a pot of beans by their feudal lords that they started throwing them in the streets
The festival ends on the evening of Shrove Tuesday when the judges declare one team the winner and a procession takes place
The Battle of the Oranges has become more and more popular in recent years with some travelling from other countries to join in on the fun
Most of the 25,000 population of Ivrea attend the famous battle although many watch from a safe distance rather than getting involved in the action
One castle defender takes an orange to the face at Sunday's battle. It is advised that anyone with open cuts does not participate in the festival
The orange throwers wear the traditional colours of their team while they defend their designated turf in the piazzas.
There are 46 horse-drawn carts going around the town, each with castle defenders inside with helmets and pads.
These are the targets for the thousands of throwers representing the uprising townspeople.
Judges announce the best team at the end of the festival followed by a procession.
More than a million oranges from southern Italy and Sicily are used in the festival that would have otherwise been thrown away.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
