«Breaking News» Remain-backing party leaders accuse Jeremy Corbyn of ‘prevaricating’ over a second referendum

Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of 'prevaricating' and urged to back a second referendum 'before the window of opportunity closes' following a meeting with other opposition party leaders in Westminster.

Labour said this afternoon's meeting with the SNP's Ian Blackford, Lib Dem leader Vince Cable, Plaid Cymru's Liz Saville Roberts and the Green's Caroline Lucas had been 'constructive'.

But in a joint statement afterwards they painted a less positive picture after he said that if MPs did not back a deal or a 'public vote' he would seek a Brexit with 'a close economic relationship with the EU'.

Labour said he maintained his position that the party would 'commit' to back a public vote if Mrs May got a deal through Parliament 'with threats and phony bribes'.

Mr Blackford said the leaders had told Mr Corbyn that 'any form of Brexit would strip away our rights, and cause serious harm to jobs, living standards, our public services and the economy'.

He added: 'We welcome the gradual movement from Jeremy Corbyn but time is running out.

'If there is to be a hope of giving the people a choice over their future, Labour must stop prevaricating, start fulfilling their duty as the official opposition and prioritise a second EU referendum, with the option to Remain, before it is too late.'

The Labour leader will also hold separate talks with MPs pushing a soft Brexit amid demands he take the lead of calls for a new public vote on the Brexit deal.

Mr Corbyn will also meet members of the 'Norway Plus' group of MPs in a separate meeting on Tuesday.

The group is determined to force a soft Brexit through to end the current impasse.

In their joint statement the four smaller party Westminster leaders said:

'In the meeting our message was clear, Labour must move to back a public vote, which includes the option to remain, before the window of opportunity closes.

'There is no such thing as a good Brexit – whether it is a Labour or Conservative version of it – jobs, public services and the environment will suffer.

'Remaining in the EU is the best deal on offer and with time running out, Labour must now deliver on their promises so that we can avoid a catastrophic Brexit.'

A Labour spokeswoman said:  'The party leaders affirmed their common opposition to the government's botched deal or a no deal outcome.

Should there not be a majority in parliament for May's deal or a public vote, Corbyn called on the other parties to engage constructively to find a parliamentary majority for a close economic relationship with the EU that can work for the whole country.

'The party leaders discussed efforts to ensure May's deal would be put to a public vote if she is able to force it through parliament with threats and phony bribes.'

The meeting came after an aide to Chancellor Philip Hammond warned a Labour MP's plan to put the Brexit deal to a referendum could be the 'only option' to save it.

Huw Merriman said he had voted in favour of the deal, in favour of keeping a no deal alive and against delaying Brexit.

But after the Commons crushed the deal and endorsed delay, he said a proposal from Labour MP Peter Kyle could now save Theresa May's plans.

Mr Kyle, together with Phil Wilson, has outlined a possible amendment to the 'meaningful vote' that approves the deal if it is put to a referendum.

Mr Corbyn is poised to order his MPs to vote for it - giving the amendment a fighting chance whether the Government seizes on the plan or not.

The idea may never come to fruition after Speaker John Bercow ruled the Government cannot simply bring back its deal to the Commons unchanged.

In a Sky News interview on Sunday, Mr Corbyn stressed that Labour was 'not supporting Theresa May's deal at all because we think it's a blindfold Brexit which will actually do enormous damage to our economy'.

But he indicated that the party could officially back an amendment tabled by backbenchers Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson who have put forward a plan to support the deal on the condition it is put to a referendum.

'We have obviously got to see the wording of it,' Mr Corbyn said.

Asked if he was 'enthusiastic' about a referendum, Mr Corbyn said: 'I'm enthusiastic about getting a deal with Europe which guarantees our future trading relationship and protects job and industries in this country.

'I do think people should have a choice on that.'

Challenged on whether he would vote Remain in a referendum, Mr Corbyn said: 'It depends what the choice is in front of us.

'If we have got a good deal in which we can have a dynamic relationship with Europe, which is all the trading relationship and so on, then that might be a good way forward that unites the country.'

Repeatedly challenged on whether he wanted to leave the EU Mr Corbyn said: 'We want to have a relationship with the EU of the type I set out and people will have a choice on that.

'But there will be a credible choice in any referendum that Labour proposes.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
