Prince Charles has revealed he steers clear of using teabags because they contain plastic.
He also said the increasing amount of plastic polluting the environment meant that someone might have to ‘re-engineer his gut’ to help break it all down.
The prince made the comments yesterday while visiting Polymateria, a west London company that has created biodegradable plastic which breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and microbes within two years – rather than hundreds of years for normal plastic.

He said he avoids using teabags because plastic is used to heat-seal them
The knowledge that a plastic called polypropylene is used to heat-seal teabags was not widely known until 2017, when Mike Armitage, a gardener from Wrexham, noticed they left white residue behind when put on a compost heap. Following his campaign, tea-makers PG Tips and Yorkshire Tea switched away from using plastic.
Charles, who unveiled a plaque to commemorate his visit to Polymateria, said: ‘I’m thrilled to have the chance to see what is happening in this remarkable place and I can only hope and pray you develop even more clever ways of removing this deadly waste.’
Talking to Dr Chris Wallis, head of the company’s innovations team, based in White City, Charles said that plastic in teabags was ‘very worrying… that’s why I try to avoid them’.
He added: ‘We’re all eating plastic... we’re going to have to re-engineer my gut to break it down.’
However, Charles might have to avoid teabags made by his Duchy Originals firm. Last night a spokesman for Waitrose, which stocks Duchy Organic teabags revealed they too were sealed with plastic.
Currently, out of 320million tons of plastic created every year, 30 per cent leaks into the natural environment. Charles described getting plastic out of the ocean as ‘one of the greatest challenges we face’.

The Daily Mail’s Turn The Tide On Plastic campaign has long been raising awareness of the need to keep plastic waste out of rivers, seas and the countryside.
Between March 22 and April 23, together with Keep Britain Tidy, the Daily Mail is encouraging our army of readers to sign up to the Great British Spring Clean and pick up litter in their local area. So far, 192,488 have signed up.
Niall Dunne, Polymateria’s chief executive, said it has been in talks with chains including Marks & Spencer, Asda and Waitrose about its Cycleplus biodegradeable packaging.
He added: ‘We’re designing packaging that if it does wind up in nature isn’t going to be around for hundreds of years choking sea birds and so on.’
Clearing up after the night before
Plucky volunteers took to the waters of Bristol Harbour in their battle against litter – and in just two hours fished out enough rubbish to fill 16 bin bags.
The old docks are surrounded by restaurants, bars, shops and a bustling market – and the area pays the price for its popularity with huge amounts of rubbish floating on its surface, creating an eyesore that is also a deadly hazard to the area’s wildlife.
And despite getting a daily clean from harbour staff who pluck out plastic bags, takeaway leftovers, bottles and cans, the volunteers who for the past few years have carried out this deep clean on the first Sunday of each month say things get even worse in the summer when the waterfront is busier.
Volunteer Xeena Cooper, 36, a community artist, said: ‘People converge on the city centre for nights out and all sorts of trash either ends up getting thrown or blown into the harbour.
‘The clean-up is good for morale – people feel like they are doing something about it instead of throwing their hands up in the air in despair.
‘It is really good fun and there is a sense of achievement.’
The group, which numbers about 40 volunteers, use nets on long rods to fish out the rubbish.
Among the 16 bin bags of rubbish collected there was a pumpkin, some nightclub photo-booth photos and books about Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Organisers said recent litter picks have found a cannabis plant, a bicycle and a ‘huge pair of Y fronts’.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
