Labour will risk a massive rebellion by MPs in Northern leave-voting areas by ordering MPs to back a vote calling for a second Brexit referendum.
John McDonnell suggested today said today that the party was likely to 'whip' in favour of a second vote when they are asked to decide on it next week.
Jeremy Corbyn has already been warned he faces a revolt by as many as 70 Labour MPs in Leave-voting areas in those regions who warned that the party faces a catastrophe at ballot box if they fail to deliver Brexit.
But a new poll revealed that Labour voters in its heartlands overwhelmingly support its move to support a second referendum, with three quarters in favour.
John McDonnell said that Labour Mps should 'look to the long-term interests of the country' and support a second Brexit referendum
Jeremy Corbyn (pictured today at a London mosque) faces another crisis on Brexit as MPs in heartland Labour seats in the north and Midlands threatened to vote against plans for a second referendum, despite a new poll that suggests the vast majority of the party's voters in those areas want one
The YouGov survey of 5,000 Labour voters found that if it was a choice between Remain and backing Prime Minister Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement, the split would be 81% to 19% in favour of staying in the EU
Mr McDonnell told Sky's Ridge on Sunday: 'Normally we will whip and that will be decided in the normal way by the chief whip and the shadow cabinet and the party overall.
'I think on an issue as this we would see a whip but also you've got to respect people's views and their constituency interests as well, and the whipping arrangement will be determined in discussion in due course.
'I just say this - and I think it'll be for MPs right the way across the House in all parties now - that they've got to look to the long-term interests of the country, they've got to protect people's jobs, they've got to protect the economy, otherwise we'll never be forgiven in the future.'
However Don Valley MP Caroline Flint warned the same programme that 'there are 60 to 70 MPs who feel as I do strongly against a second referendum'.
She called on the party to 'engage' with any 'improved offer' the Prime Minister managed to get from Brussels, adding: 'My appeal to John McDonnell, to Jeremy Corbyn, to Keir Starmer, is allow MPs to have a free vote on an improved deal.
'So those MPs who want a second referendum can vote for that but those of us who want to keep our promises to our electorate can also keep faith with those people and vote for an improved deal.'
The Labour leader has shifted to support a second referendum and Labour said no deal would not be on the ballot paper.
MP John Mann warned Labour would face a furious backlash in the Midlands and the North where the party's supporters backed Brexit in their millions
More than one third (35 per cent) of those polled said the policy change to push for a new Brexit vote made them feel more favourably towards Labour, while 14% said it made them feel less so.
The survey of 5,000 voters across the North, Yorkshire and Humber and the Midlands found that 76% would support staying in the EU, with 24% against.
If it was a choice between Remain and backing Prime Minister Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement, the split would be 81% to 19% in favour of staying in the EU, according to the survey.
Only 14% of those polled wanted their MP to back the Government's proposed terms for leaving the EU.
And more than two thirds, 68%, said it was more important to maintain frictionless free trade than control immigration, while 17% disagreed with the statement.
Don Valley MP Caroline Flint warned up to 70 MPs from Leave areas could break the whip over a second referendum vote and urged the front bench to allow a free vote next week
Mr McDonnell, asked on Ridge if he would attend the People's Vote campaign march later this month, joked: 'Well, I'll think about it certainly, I'm not one to miss a good march.
'I also have to say as well I don't want to do anything or say anything that disrespects the people who strongly, in my own constituency and elsewhere, who supported Leave and I don't want to do anything that offends them.'
Peter Kellner, former president of YouGov, said: 'The myth that Labour voters in the party's heartlands favour Brexit is just that - a myth.
'Those who voted Labour in 2017 in the Midlands and North favoured Remain by two-to-one in 2016, support Remain by three-to-one today; and, if given a referendum choice between Remain and Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement, back Remain by four-to-one.
'That explains why such big majorities of these Labour voters want a new public vote and approve of Labour's new policy.
'This survey also suggests that Labour's heartland supporters are less hostile to immigration than is commonly thought.'
Last week 50 Labour MPs threateened threatening to derail Jeremy Corbyn's plan to back a second referendum.
But the surprise move sparked a furious confrontation at a shadow cabinet meeting.
MP John Mann warned Labour would face a furious backlash in the Midlands and the North where the party's supporters backed Brexit in their millions.
He blasted Labour would meet the same fate as Nick Clegg's Lib Dems after their u-turn on tuition fees - an electoral wipe out in 2015.
Mr Mann and two other northern MPs estimate between 45-50 MPs would defy Mr Corbyn and not back a second referendum.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
