Jameela Jamil has revealed she was once 'punched in the face' by a man after she rejected his advances as a teenager.
The television presenter and actress, 33, recalled the encounter on Twitter on Sunday - and hundreds of people have since shared similar experiences with street harassment.
Jameela, who was just 19 at the time, said the stranger became aggressive when she snubbed his romantic interest and 'didn't have an excuse'.

She wrote: 'I once said no thank you to a man when I was 19 and didn't have an excuse... and he punched me in the face.
'After that whether or not I have a boyfriend, I say I do. Being a woman is truly, constantly scary. It's like existing on thin ice.'
The Good Place star went on to say 'we need to change the way we see rejection as a society' so it 'doesn't feel like the ground it swallowing you up when someone says no.'
'This would lessen their need to lash out,' she wrote.

The series of tweets sparked a conversation between the actress' 736,000 followers - who began to recall their own experiences with 'scary' responses to rejection.
One user said: 'I once politely turned down a guy who approached me mid-shopping by saying what you did.
'He said he was surprised I had a bf with my 'attitude', carried on walking with me and said I'm probably too expensive anyway before another guy stood in between us and asked if I was OK.'
Another commented: 'I was telling a story about unwanted male attention to one of my guy mates recently. He uttered the f****** awful cliche "You should be flattered".

Excuses: Jameela, who was just 19 at the time, said the stranger became aggressive when she snubbed his romantic interest and 'didn't have an excuse' (pictured in January)
'What's sad is he genuinely meant it & I've been trying ever since to get across how so-called positive attention can be scary.'
And a third said: 'This reminds me of a time I was bartending and some dude asked for my number.
'I declined and said I was married he then follows up with, "Are you really married because a lot of girls wear fake rings just to get out of handing out their numbers."
'I responded, "It disturbs me that you make women so uncomfortable they have to make up a fictional husband to get you to leave them alone and still think that the women are the problem in this situation".

Followed: Another follower warned that unwanted attention can become dangerous, saying she had been followed home after her eye contact was misunderstood

TV talent: Jameela shot to fame as a presenter on Channel 4's youth show T4 in 2008 when she was just 22 (pictured)
'I also had our door guy walk me to my car after closing. Just to be safe.'
Another person warned that unwanted attention can become dangerous, saying she had been followed home after her eye contact was misunderstood.
She said: 'I once had something in my eye while driving and used the rear view mirror to get it out. The guy in the car behind me thought I was winking at him and followed me all the way home. I was terrified.'
One Twitter user said that when speaking out about sexual assault, often the victim is not believed, sharing that her friends had asked what she was wearing after she was attacked.
She said: 'Women, who I considered friends, say it is still the woman’s fault proves how far we have to come.'

Rejection: Jameela had confessed earlier in the day that a man had once 'threatened her career' after she rejected him
After seeing the responses to her tweets, Jameela, who has previously spoken out about body-shaming and airbrushing in the media, said: 'Let this be an education to everyone out there about our experience as the disrespected/disregarded gender.
'I'm so sorry to you all for what you've been put through for daring to govern your own vagina.'
Jameela had confessed earlier in the day that a man had once 'threatened her career' after she rejected him.
She wrote: 'Was out at the shops with my friend. Man ogles me. Man then approaches me to give me his number.
'I explain I have a boyfriend but thank him for the offer. Man then threatens my career, saying I better remember that I rejected him.
'And then shouts at me that I'm low class...'
It comes after Jameela hit out at Khloe Kardashian on Thursday after the reality star posted an Instagram snap promoting a controversial weight loss product.
The actress called out Khloe for being 'irresponsible' in the comments of the image, which advertised a meal replacement shake.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
