«Breaking News» Incredible 10-mile-long lake forms along the notoriously cracked and dry Death Valley

It's typically the driest place in the country, but thanks to record rainfall, the Death Valley has been replaced with an enormous, glittering lake.

A massive 10-mile expanse of water has developed in Death Valley National Park last week following heavy rainfall and flooding on several park roads in Southern California

The valley is typically one of the hottest places in the world during peak summer months, along with deserts in the Middle East.

But last week the basin was far from recognizable as it was replaced with a placid lake that reflected the mountains above it.

Astounded nature photographer Elliott McGucken snapped photos of the mesmerizing display on March 7 and shared them on his website.

He wanted to capture the Badwater Basin in the valley which reaches a depth of 282ft below sea level at its lowest point, but couldn't reach it as the lake was in the way.

'It's a surreal feeling seeing so much water in the world's driest place. There's an irony even though I couldn't get down to Badwater Basin. Overall, I think these shots are probably more unique,' McGucken said to SFGate.

He was able to capture the Panamint Range - the tallest Telescope peak covered in snow - reflected in the clear water.

Experts say the mud cracked tiles of the valley acts like concrete and holds water above it easily, leading to the lake formation

The park speculated that the lake measures about 10miles long although an exact measurement has not been taken.

'I believe we would need aerial photos to accurately determine the size. From the road, it looks like it stretched from approximately Harmony Borax Works to Salt Creek right after the rain, which is a little less than 10 road miles. But, the road does curve a bit, so it's not an entirely accurate guess,' the park said in an emailed statement to McGucken.

From last Tuesday to Wednesday in the 24-hour window the valley saw 0.84inches of rain. The surrounding mountains saw 1 to 1.5inches fall.

The average rainfall for March is 0.3inches of rainfall.

While it may not sound like a deluge of rainfall, the desert valley does not easily absorb water. To add to it, the rainfall runs off the mountains and easily collects in the valley.

'The desert soils are dry and compact. It's like putting water on concrete,' NWS meterologist Todd Lericos said to the outlet.

Flooding doesn't happen often in the Valley, and the last time it created a lake was in 2005 when it received four times the annual rainfall of 1.5inches. The lake, dubbed Lake Badwater, was formed in February 2005 and evaporated by February 2007.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
