Nearly everyone who has ever been to the circus has seen male performers lift female ones above their heads in impressive feats of strength and balance — but one New York City-based couple of circus performers is turning the tables.
Virginia Tuells, 38, and her husband Ihosvanys 'Giovanni' Perez, 39, have been performing together for over a decade and a half. But while he's been hoisting her up into the air from day one, these days she returns the favor, lifting him up as well.
And if her incredible physical strength didn't make Virginia impressive enough, when she's not on stage in front of a crowd, she's taking care of her one-year-old daughter, whom she labored with for 48 hours.
Incredible! Virginia Tuells, 38, and her husband Ihosvanys 'Giovanni' Perez, 39, have been performing together for over a decade and a half
Strong like a girl! Virginia and Giovanni both lift each other up during various parts of the act
Don't underestimate her! They currently have a couples act in the touring Big Apple Circus
Compact: Though she is just five feet tall and 100lbs., Virginia also lifts her 5'6", 150-pound husband
Dreams: Virginia likes that she is sending a message that girls can do anything
The couple spoke to Today this week about their unusual careers, and how things got even crazier when they became a family of three.
Giovanni is from Cuba, and Virginia from Argentina. In 2003, the couple met in Mexico City where they were performing.
It became more than romance: It was also a circus act. The duo melded their individual acts together, changing it over the years.
Together they have performed at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the US, Circus Krone in Munich, on the French TV show Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde, and Queen of the Night in New York.
Their current routine, which they do at the Big Apple Circus, took six to eight months to perfect.
Circus family: In December of 2017, they had a baby named Sofia
Cutie: Virginia stopped performing while pregnant but went back to work three months later
Next generation! As for whether Sofia will join the circus one day, Giovanni told the New York Post last year: 'I don’t want to push her [into] the circus life. But in my heart I want to bring her!'

Team: Together they have performed at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the US, Circus Krone in Munich, and on the French TV show Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde
Must be love: They perform together five days a week in front of cheering crowds
Though at first they were a typical male-female act, with Giovanni doing most of the lifting, things shifted when it became clear to Giovanni how strong Virginia is.
Though she is just five feet tall and 100lbs., she now also lifts her 5'6", 150-pound husband, holding him over her head while he does a handstand.
And she does it in heels.
'When they see me in person they say, "How can you do that? You are such a small girl." And I say, “Yes, women, we have power,"' she told Today.
'Woman power!' said her husband. 'I say, "Hey, what about me?" …Oh, you don’t care.'
Now performing as Duo Fusion with the Big Apple Circus, they started in New York, put have since moved onto Washington, D.C. Next they will be in Peabody, Massacusettes and Philadelphia through the spring.

Backstage kid: With Sofia now 14 months old, her parents still perform most of the week and bring her along
Level up: Virginia does the whole act in heels but still manages to lift her husband
Muscle: The couple do a dancing tango act with tough lifts
They perform together five days a week in front of cheering crowds.
The pair is naturally already incredibly impressive, but they took things up a notch in 2017 when Virginia got pregnant.
At the advice of her doctor, she stopped performing six weeks into her pregnancy. But she didn't stop exercising regularly. She continued to keep fit with regular workouts, which surprisingly don't include much heavy lifting — because if she gains too much muscle, she'll be heavier and harder to lift.
The couple welcomed a daughter, Sofia, in Christmas 2017, and Virginia went back to work three months later.
With Sofia now 14 months old, her parents still perform most of the week and bring her along. Virginia breastfeeds backstage, timing it so her daughter nurses three acts before she has to go on. By the time it's their turn, Sofia is asleep and can be watched by other performers.
Double duty: Virginia breastfeeds backstage, timing it so her daughter nurses three acts before she has to go on
Fun! By the time it's their turn, Sofia is asleep and can be watched by other performers
Upgrade: They'd initially done a traditional act with just Giovanni doing the lifting, but he realized how strong his wife is
Message: Virginia clearly loves her job, and thinks about the message that her strong performance sends not just to her daughter, but to the kids in the audience
There are other circus kids, too, who run around while their parents perform.
Virginia clearly loves her job, and thinks about the message that her strong performance sends not just to her daughter, but to the kids in the audience.
She imagines them being impressed and thinking, 'She can lift him up,. She can do everything she wants.'
'I’m so proud of that,' she said.
As for whether Sofia will join the circus one day, Giovanni told the New York Post last year: 'I don’t want to push her [into] the circus life. But in my heart I want to bring her!'
'She’s going to do whatever she wants to do, and what she has the passion to do,' said Virginia. 'Just like what happened with us.'

Virginia Tuells, 38, and her husband Ihosvanys ...
It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
