«Breaking News» Central Park's resident Mandarin duck faces competition from stunning Great Blue Heron

A Great Blue Heron has become the latest bird to steal the limelight from Central Park's well-known wildlife residents.

A picture of the majestic bird, which is electric blue in color, was shared on Twitter last week by photographer Rosalie Quinto-Domingo.

She spotted the Great Blue Heron at The Pond, which is also home to the Mandarin duck.

She said: 'I just came out from work nearby late afternoon and decided to drop by the Pond and then there's this beautiful Great Blue Heron standing on the dead tree and I quickly grab my camera to take a few shots.'

The Great Blue Heron has its origins in South East Asia.

But David Barrett, who manages the Manhattan Bird Alert Twitter account that keeps followers abreast of the latest rare bird sightings and beyond, claimed that Great Blue Herons can be seen throughout the year.

He told Fox News: 'You might see one or two in the park at any given time throughout the year, but they’re never seen in large numbers.'

Barrett said the Great Blue Heron that Quinto-Demigo captured an image of hasn’t been seen at The Pond since last week.

But the bird could return, as these creatures 'tend to follow patterns,' he revealed.

Barrett added: 'These birds come back to places where they find food; they like to fish on small ponds and lakes.'

He also explained that other Great Blue Herons have been spotted by bird watchers on Randall’s Island and near Inwood Hill Park.

The Great Blue Heron wades slowly or stands statue-like, stalking fish in shallow water before stabbing their prey with their long bills.

They are usually to be found in saltwater and freshwater habitats, from open coasts, marshes, sloughs, riverbanks, and lakes to backyard goldfish ponds.

Barrett added: 'They will stand in shallow water and try to be as still as possible and wait for fish to come by.

'When they see it, it coils its neck and gets ready to strike, using its long bill as a spear. Like a sling that shoots [its] bill into the fish.'

However mandarin ducks still seem to hold court in Central Park, where the species has been a resident since 2011.

The Mandarin duck can usually be found at the Central Pond at the southeast corner of the park at 60th Street.

Last year Barrett said he saw a record 230 species of wild birds in Manhattan. He is currently awaiting on the expected migrant bird species, which are starting to arrive now.

'People are finding out that amazing birds can be observed here in Manhattan,' he added.

The Mandarin Duck has many similar features to the Wood Duck. The exotic waterfowl is a bird of Eastern Asia, but today can be found in zoos, birds centers and parks  around the world.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
