«Breaking News» Westlife reunion tour is for fans and 'not money'

Westlife are back with a bang as their first single in eight years hits the airwaves on Thursday, ahead of their reunion tour kicking off in May.

And ahead of their long-awaited comeback, the fantastic four - comprised of Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and Shane Filan - spoke exclusively to MailOnline about apprehension over the return.

The group chatted all things reunion, including their incentive behind the tour, the possibility of former bandmate Brian McFadden returning, fears over the comeback and the fact money has not driven them despite former financial woes.

Westlife soared to fame in 1998 when they were formed in Dublin, with the original line-up also featuring Brian, who later left in 2004.

The group broke hearts of fans around the globe when they announced plans to disband in 2012 before all embarking on respective solo careers over the years.

In October, Westlife announced their return - with both new music and an anniversary tour - as Shane delightedly revealed: 'We still have a lot that we want to achieve as a band and we want to bring our new music to fans all over the world'.

With the Ed Sheeran-penned Hello My Love released on Thursday, the foursome are blazing the promo trail with force.

While there has been much talk of megabucks deals with Simon Cowell for the return, the boys insist they were driven by the incentive of giving their fans the best possible show they can - and not finances.

Shane has been candid about the fact that he filed for bankruptcy in 2012 after investing in a property development in his native Sligo however the property crash then hit Ireland, leaving him with no money to build on the land.

Despite his woes, the band are insistent the money is nothing to do with the tour, as Kian clearly stated: 'It was never about money, there's no amount of money because it's about being a band and bringing a great tour for our fans.'

With tongues wagging and endless reports swirling over the state of their relationship with Brian, the boys insisted there is absolutely no bad blood.

A determined Kian stated: 'There's no feud with Brian full stop. It's a very simple case of Brian was a part of the band for the first five years and the band existed for eight years without him and when we got back together Westlife was a four...

'He's part of a band that doesn't exist. There's no negativity, no bad blood. There's only positivity and it's a case that the Westlife we're members of, is a four. That's it.'

Echoing the sentiment, Shane, who shares kids Nicole, 13, Patrick, 10, and Shane, eight, with wife Gillian, revealed his daughter saw an image of Brian on one of the group's earlier records and did not know who he was.

He said: 'Our kids, might have seen a picture on a disc and my daughter saw him and was like, "Who's that guy?" Because she never knew him. It was 15 years ago. My daughter wasn't born and she's 13 now'.

Mark continued: 'We wonder when we'll stop being asked about it because it was 15 years ago. There was never a question of Brian being involved.'

Hello My Love is undoubtedly set to send loyal fans wild, with a fresh sound layered over lyrics about their changing appearance.

The boys sing: 'I know I'm punching way above // So lucky that we fell in love // Sometimes I wonder am I enough // You could have someone without a belly or a temper, perfect teeth, hair growing where it's meant to.'

Shane said of the song's release: 'It's very exciting. The big reveal. People are saying genuinely it's really fresh'.

On the self-deprecating lyrics, Mark said: 'We're used to it, the song so we're waiting. We're not as preened as some but we do preen ourselves because we do have crooked teeth and thin hair!!... The lyrics aren't for us - its written by Ed Sheeran - but it was written for Westlife.'

Shane divulged their main concerns about making their comeback, stating: 'There was two things - do fans want to see us and do they want then music and how will they find the new music? We were in the studio since last July...

'The anniversary was to salute that and the new music. It has to be up there at world class level. Building up the tour on sale and that was a nerve-wracking week. Selling out in one or two days gave us a boost and made us realise the fans still want us.'

He added that the group are genuinely as excited as fans to bring their old hits back, saying: 'We feel fresh, we feel excited. We were saying the other day, I can't wait to sing Flying Without Wings again, we can't wait to sing Swear It Again again...

'It's going to be exciting for us but also for our fans. There's such a connection with pour fans and a history and its a dream come true for us.'

Despite excitement over the old songs, Kian insisted their new material will be just as thrilling for both devoted fans and their new followers.

He said: 'It's not gonna be a one single album it's very upbeat and very uptempo. We wanted new music and we wanted to move forward despite the past. The song represents all of that. This is the entry point.'

Clearly living the dream, he continued: 'It's like when you're younger and you dream of being a pop star and we got to do that and it's amazing but we get to do it again. It's the buzz of being able to live that dream twice...

'Amazing': 'Having that again is amazing. It's a very exciting time and had the songs not come in and the fans not wanted to see us again we would have been able to say it's okay'

Shane admits they were worried about the return, yet the response from fans quashed the concerns: 'To a degree deep down all of us were apprehensive about coming back and we've all been wondering about how it will do...

'We wanted to come back on as bigger way as possible. It's about setting up the future for Westlife and continuing on and creating a better version of us...

'The fact we're doing interviews after finishing. Last time we did this we were speaking about the end of something but now it's an exciting place to be.'

Shane said: 'They're five or six years before us but I'm sure there'll be some crossover with our fans - I'd go to their show if I was nearby.'

Kian also recalled Mel B throwing her support behind them at the beginning, revealing: 'Mel B came up to me and said that we're doing all right at the Smash Hits poll winners party in like 1999. I remember looking at her and thinking "That's Mel B."'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
