The BBC's New Year cookery coverage has kicked off and two Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge is firmly at the helm.

The cheery television personality, who counts a thriving four-restaurant empire and countless food books among his achievements, has been anointed the latest star of the broadcaster's popular cookery programmes.

Teaching a series of families how to make fresh home-cooked healthy food, Kerridge is joined by his own adorable brood, sculptor wife Beth Cullen-Kerridge and son Acey, three.

Indeed, the latest episode, which aired last night, sparked huge debate on social media, after Kerridge advised viewers to use tin foil with the 'shiny side down', leaving thousands on Twitter wondering whether they'd been using the wrapping 'upside down'.

The 45-year-old chef's younger self might struggle to recognise the handsome host who's guiding eight families to a healthier lifestyle.

Just five years ago, Kerridge, who started out as a child actor but found his fortune in the kitchen after attending culinary college at 18, weighed in at 30 stone.

The chef said he decided he needed to go on a diet when he turned 40, fearing that he would die young if he didn't make a drastic change.

Tom managed to shed a remarkable 12 stone over a three-year period, going from 30 stone to 18 stone.  He managed to shed the pounds by cutting carbs and alcohol out of his diet, and eating fewer calories.

I would always be the last man standing, driving it on. At the end of service I would order a pint of Negroni, just as a starter. I miss that guy, I miss the chaos and I miss the fun - but I can't. I worry about it all the time.

 Tom Kerridge on alcohol

Describing his feelings on how he looked before his transformation, the chef told the Sunday Times he felt: 'Mortified… I mean, it doesn’t even look like me. I was absolutely huge.'

Last year, the chef released a book entitled Tom Kerridge’s Dopamine Diet: My Low-Carb, Stay-Happy Way To Lose Weight, which topped the non-fiction best-sellers chart.

Alongside food, alcohol had also become a demon. Recalling years of heavy drinking, he told Radio 4's Desert Island Discs: 'Alcohol had gained a grip. I have completely destroyed alcohol for myself. I'm untrustworthy with it. I was drinking colossal amounts.

'I would say I'm probably dependent on alcohol. I don't understand "a drink"'.

TOM KERRIDGE SPARKS #TINFOILGATE ON TWITTER

The chef showed viewers how to use tin foil on his new BBC Two show Fresh Start and sent Twitter users into meltdown after explaining that you should put the shiny side face down.

In the show, Kerridge guides eight families and helps them completely change the way they eat through a six-step, 12-week plan.

However, the most noteworthy part of tonight's episode was when the chef suggested that wrapping food with the shiny side up was wrong.

The 45-year-old chef made the claim about the baking foil during the second episode of his BBC Two show Fresh Start, sending viewers to Twitter in shock

His claim led to stunned viewers taking to Twitter to express their shock.

Kerridge said that the shiny side is more reflective, making it better and more effective at keeping food warm.

On Twitter, one user commented: ' Tom Kerridge on BBC2 just said tin foil always put shiny side down. I always have it shiny side up! Have I been doing it wrong all these years?'

A second user wrote: 'I've been using tin foil upside down for 40 years.'

Reynold's Kitchen, which produces different types of aluminium foil, says on its website: 'With standard and heavy duty foil, it’s perfectly fine to place your food on either side so you can decide if you prefer to have the shiny or dull side facing out.

'The performance of the foil is the same, whichever side you use.'

However, he also said his 'colossal' boozing helped him to success in the kitchen and on TV, saying: 'I don’t regret that period at all. Alcohol became a huge release for driving the business forward, to winning two Michelin stars. It always proved this massive release of energy, of pressure.'

After ditching drink and losing weight, Kerridge and his wife Beth Cullen-Kerridge embarked on another new project, having a child.

The couple met and fell in love in 1997 at a mutual friend’s birthday party while Kerridge was a sous chef at Gary Rhodes's London restaurant and Beth was establishing her career as a sculptor.

Their son Acey was born on 21st December 2015 and the family live in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
