Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket, has confirmed reports that it will swing the axe on thousands of jobs across its stores and head office.
It said today that up to 9,000 jobs are at risk as it attempts to 'simplify' the business and battle what it described as a 'competitive and challenging market'.
Tesco's UK and Ireland boss Jason Tarry said: 'In our four years of turnaround we've made good progress, but the market is challenging and we need to continually adapt to remain competitive and respond to how customers want to shop.
Tesco group chief executive Dave Lewis (above) earned the moniker 'Drastic Dave' during his time at consumer goods giant Unilever
'We're making changes to our UK stores and head office to simplify what we do and how we do it, so we're better able to meet the needs of our customers. This will impact some of our colleagues and our commitment is to minimise this as much as possible and support our colleagues throughout.'
Tesco said it hopes to redeploy around half of the impacted staff to new roles.
Tesco confirmed that 9,000 jobs are at risk as it shuts down some deli counters and makes cuts at head office
A radical shake-up at the supermarket will include a reduction in deli counters, with 90 stores set to lose the service altogether. Tesco will also slash the hours staff spend on stock control and merchandising.
Head office workers are facing cuts too as the company moves, it said, to a 'simpler and leaner structure'.
The changes will not just impact Tesco employees. Some third-party caterers are at risk as the grocer swaps hot food services in its staff rooms for self-service kitchens.
Tesco denied reports, however, that it plans to scale back its in-store bakeries this year.
Trade union Usdaw's national officer Pauline Foulkes said it was 'devastating news' for staff, who have played a 'crucial role in Tesco's turnaround project'.
The grocer has chalked up 12 successive quarters of growth and, earlier this month, hailed solid Christmas trading, boosted by sales from its newly acquired wholesale business Booker.
Foulkes said: 'We will enter into consultation talks with Tesco, where we will examine the business case for their proposed changes.'
The seismic overhaul - one of the most dramatic since group boss Dave Lewis took the reins - comes as Tesco and its 'Big Four' rivals struggle to stave off the rising influence of Aldi and Lidl.
The German discounters both hailed record-breaking Christmases, with two thirds of all shoppers heading there in December.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
