«Breaking News» Coast Guard tells employees going without pay because of shutdown to have garage sale

Thousands of civilians working for the US Coast Guard who are being affected by the ongoing government shutdown were advised to find supplemental income during their furlough by holding a garage sale, baby sitting or dog-walking.

Others money-making ideas listed on a tip sheet compiled by the Coast Guard Support Program included selling 'unwanted, large ticket items through the newspaper'; house-sitting; turning a hobby into income; offering music lessons, and lastly, becoming a mystery shopper.

'Retailer are desperate to check how their in-store customer service is and will employee you to shop and rate their service,' the tip sheet promised.

Unlike all other military branches that operate under the auspices of the Defense Department, which has not been impacted by the shutdown, the Coast Guard is funded by the Department of Homeland Security.

Of 245,000 department employees, nearly 213,000 have been deemed essential, so they are working without pay until a funding bill is passed.

The US Coast Guard employs 8,500 civilians, of whom 6,400 are on furlough, The Washington Post reported. The other 2,100 are considered essential, which means they have been working without pay from the start of the shutdown. They were last paid on December 22, 2018.

Titled 'Managing Your Finances During a Furlough,’ the tip sheet, which was removed from the Coast Guard's website Wednesday, urged employees to come up with a strategy to address anticipated financial problems, and outlined steps offering ways to get back on track.

After The Post reported on the tip sheet, a Coast Guard spokesperson stated that the suggestions did not ‘reflect the Coast Guard’s current efforts to support our workforce during this lapse in appropriations. As such, this guidance has been removed.’

Beside the civilian staff, 41,000 active-duty Coast Guardsmen are currently serving without pay, having been promised that they will receive back pay at the conclusion of the shutdown, now in its 19th day.

This afternoon, President Donald Trump met with congressional Democrats to try and end the stalemate, but the negotiations broke down after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused to fund the border wall.

Trump tweeted that he told Pelosi and Schumer ‘bye bye’ before walking out of the Situation Room.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
