United Airlines is being sued for failing to protect a teenage girl who was groped on a flight from Seattle to Newark in July 2017.
The lawsuit, which was filed last week in King County Superior Court in Washington State, blames the airline for not taking adequate action against a 30-year-old physician who acknowledged assaulting a 16-year-old girl.
Last year, the doctor, Vijaykumar Krishnappa, admitted to assaulting a sleeping girl on a flight from Seattle to New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport.
Krishnappa received a 90-day sentence after pleading guilty.
Prosecutors say Krishnappa intentionally touched the girl near her groin over her leggings without her consent.
The girl, who he did not know, was sleeping in the seat next to him on the July 2017 flight.

In July 2017, a then-16-year-old girl (pictured) was flying from Seattle to New Jersey to attend a leadership academy at Princeton when she was allegedly groped by Vijakumar Krishnappa, 30, on a United Airlines flight
The Indian national was studying medicine in the U.S. at the time under a fellowship for doctors from foreign countries.
According to the lawsuit, United personnel failed to call the police after the girl reported Krishnappa to flight attendants.
Instead, Krishnappa was allowed to walk off the plane scot-free, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
It was left to the girl’s mother to notify the police the next day, when Krishnappa was arrested.
‘The conduct of United in this case is unconscionable from start to finish,’ said Samuel Daheim, the attorney representing the victim and her mother.
United issued a statement saying it cooperated with the criminal investigation and allowed the victim to change seats after she reported the incident to staff.
According to the lawsuit, the incident took place on a flight from Seattle to Newark on July 23, 2017.
The victim, who was 16 years old at the time, was flying alone for the first time in her life.
She was flying to the East Coast to attend a young women’s leadership conference at Princeton University, the lawsuit states.
When she boarded the flight, she was assigned a seat toward the back of the plane, according to the lawsuit.
Once the aircraft was preparing for takeoff, the cabin lights were shut off.
The girl anticipated sleeping throughout most of the flight.
According to the lawsuit, the girl then felt fingertips touching her knee.
Initially, she assumed that the passenger sitting next to her had fallen asleep and the contact was accidental, the lawsuit states.
But the touching continued from her knee to her upper thigh and eventually toward her genitalia.
The passenger next to her was later identified as a doctor from India who was in the United States as part of a fellowship.
According to the lawsuit, the girl felt ‘trapped and afraid’ in the dark cabin.
She thought Krishnappa would do something worse if she drew attention, the lawsuit states.
Krishnappa then slid his hand underneath the waistband of her pants. The girl then confronted him and called for a flight attendant.
When the flight attendant came over and was told what took place, the lawsuit says the flight attendant told Krishnappa: ‘Not cool, dude.’
The flight attendant then moved the girl to another seat a few rows ahead, where Krishnappa could still see her.

The lawsuit, filed last week in King County Superior Court in Washington State, blames the airline for not taking adequate action against a 30-year-old physician who acknowledged assaulting a 16-year-old girl. A United flight takes off from Newark in September
The lawsuit alleges that the flight crew did nothing to investigate or document the incident.
Instead, staff gave the girl a bag of peanuts even though she was crying hysterically and visibly upset.
By failing to notify authorities and have Krishnappa arrested, the victim is alleging that United employees violated federal law, which requires that assault be reported to law enforcement.
The girl then called her mother in tears to tell her what happened on the flight.
The mother then booked a flight to the East Coast to see her daughter. She also contacted police.
Krishnappa was arrested the next day, according to the Post-Intelligencer.
The lawsuit says that since the incident, the girl, who was unable to participate in the conference, has been suffering from social isolation.
United issued a statement which read: ‘The safety and well-being of our customers is our top priority.
‘Our customer was immediately moved to a different seat when the flight attendant was made aware of the issue.
‘We fully cooperated with law enforcement's investigation and the perpetrator has been permanently banned from flying United.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
