«Breaking News» Trump offered NASA unlimited funding to get to Mars, staffer says

President Trump offered NASA unlimited funding in 2017 if they could go to Mars before the end of his first term, according to a former White House staffer.

Trump had asked then acting NASA administrator Robert Lightfoot Jr. back in April 2017 about the agency's plans for Mars during an Oval Office meeting.

He asked the question right before a scheduled phone call with astronaut Peggy Whitson from the Oval Office to congratulate her on breaking the U.S. record for most time in space.

The details of Trump's conversation with Lightfoot are outlined in former White House staffer Cliff Sim's new book 'Team of Vipers' of which New York Magazine obtained an advanced copy.

'What's our plan for Mars?' Trump is said to have asked Lightfoot.

Just a month earlier, the President had signed new legislation for NASA to prepare for human expeditions to Mars in the 2030s.

When he was reminded of this Mars plan, Trump is said to have responded: 'But is there any way we could do it by the end of my first term?'

Lightfoot went on to explain the logistical challenges in going to Mars before 2030.

'But what if I gave you all the money you could ever need to do it?' Trump asked.

'What if we sent NASA's budget through the roof, but focused entirely on that instead of whatever else you're doing now. Could it work then?'

Sims, a former communications staffer, wrote that Trump looked 'visibly disappointed' when Lightfoot told him he didn't think it would be possible.

When the phone called with Whitson went ahead moments later, Trump raised the Mars question again.

Whitson told the president that spaceflight takes a lot of time and money, so getting to Mars will require collaboration from other countries to succeed.

NASA is building the hardware right now to test a new rocket that will carry astronauts farther from Earth than ever before, she said.

'I think, as your bill directed, it will be in the 2030s,' Whitson said of the time frame.

Trump replied that was simply too far away.

'Well, we want to try and do it during my first term or, at worst, during my second term, so we'll have to speed that up a little bit, OK?' Trump replied.

'We'll do our best,' Whitson replied.

Later, Trump said: 'I think we'll do that a lot sooner than we're even thinking. Who's ready to go to Mars up there?'

'We are absolutely ready to go to Mars,' Whitson replied.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
