«Breaking News» Pence claims 'we have crushed the ISIS caliphate' hours after attack

Vice President Mike Pence claimed hours after a bloody attack in Syria on U.S. forces that America and its allies had 'crushed' the terror group known as ISIS.

Pence first made the claim in a State Department speech and doubled down on it in an afternoon statement invoking President Donald Trump.

'President Trump and I condemn the terrorist attack in Syria that claimed American lives and our hearts are with the loved ones of the fallen,' Pence wrote. 'We honor their memory and we will never forget their service and sacrifice.'

He went on to say: 'We have crushed the ISIS caliphate and devastated its capabilities. As we begin to bring our troops home, the American people can be assured, for the sake of our soldiers, their families, and our nation, we will never allow the remnants of ISIS to reestablish their evil and murderous caliphate – not now, not ever.'

Earlier on Wednesday, after news of the attack had spread, he had claimed in a Washington, D.C. at the Global Chiefs of Mission Conference that ISIS had been defeated.

'Thanks to the leadership of this commander in chief and the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces, we’re now actually able to begin to hand off the fight against ISIS in Syria to our coalition partners, and we are bringing out troops home,' Pence said. 'The caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated.'

A statement from the White House press secretary handled the matter more delicately.

'Our deepest sympathies and love go out to the families of the brave American heroes who were killed today in Syria. We also pray for the soldiers who were wounded in the attack. Our service members and their families have all sacrificed so much for our country,' Sarah Sanders said.

Trump's spokeswoman did not mention ISIS or the president's plan to pull out troops.

The U.S. president had boasted about the withdrawal in tweets on Sunday that warned Turkey and the Kurds to behave once the U.S. has vacated the country.

'Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms,' Trump said. 'Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds. Create 20 mile safe zone.'

In a second message decrying 'ENDLESS WARS' that the United States is mired in, Trump said, 'Russia, Iran and Syria have been the biggest beneficiaries of the long term U.S. policy of destroying ISIS in Syria - natural enemies. We also benefit but it is now time to bring our troops back home.'

President Trump claimed victory over ISIS in December and said he would be bringing American troops home against the advice of his former defense secretary and ISIS coalition ambassador.  Both men quit over Trump's withdrawal plan.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham delivered a forceful statement on Wednesday, as well, faulting President Trump for having 'set in motion' enthusiasm by the enemy in Syria that resulted in the deadly attack there that killed U.S. forces.

'I'm glad you mentioned Iraq and other places where we're fighting to help people,' Graham said at the hearing about Trump's attorney general nominee William Barr.

'There was an attack today on a restaurant, I think it's the same restaurant I visited with the Kurds and Arabs and others in Manbij, Syria, to hold on some representative government, and unfortunately I believe some American advisers were killed there by ISIS,' Graham began.

'My concern, by the statements made by President Trump, is that you set in motion enthusiasm by the enemy we're fighting. You make people we're trying to help wonder about us,' he added, speaking of the local population and Kurdish fighters the U.S. has supported.

'And as they get bolder the people we're trying to help are going to get more uncertain,' Graham said. 'I saw this in Iraq. And now I'm seeing it in Syria.'

Graham was among the most vocal GOP critics of Trump when he declared victory against ISIS last month and announced the U.S. would withdraw troops.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, Graham briefly stopped the proceedings to condemn the attack and call out the president for his words.

'Every American wants our troops to come home, but I think all of us want to make sure that when they do come home we're safe. And I don't know how we're ever going to be safe if people over there can't at least sit down and talk with each other.'

The Judiciary Committee chairman and South Carolina senator was among influence who appear to have been able to persuaded Trump to slow down the announced withdrawal of about 2,000 U.S. forces there.

Trump at first said it would be immediate, then within 30 days, but has since claimed it will be happening be on a slower timetable – although early steps of withdrawal have already begun.

Trump said in a video he tweeted out last month said, 'We have won against ISIS. We've beaten them and we've beaten them badly. We've taken back the land and now it's time for our troops to come back home.'

He also declared victory against ISIS in a tweet that he has refused to walk back.

The ISIS-affiliated Amaq agency said a suicide bomber carried out the latest attack.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said 20 people were killed.  It is likely the deadliest attack on U.S. forces since they were inserted in 2015 under President Barack Obama to roll back ISIS forces.

Trump has not commented himself, although his press secretary and vice president released statements.

The Pentagon released a statement on Twitter that said: 'U.S. service members were killed during an explosion while conducting a routine patrol in Syria today. We are still gathering information and will share additional details at a later time.'

It didn't not give a precise casualty number. U.S. officials told several news outlets that four American soliders were killed, however.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 16 people died in total including at least nine civilians while dozens more were wounded.

Local reports suggested the soldiers were inside the restaurant when a bomber detonated their device outside.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
