The Catholic organization Opus Dei paid $977,000 in 2005 to settle a sexual misconduct complaint against a once prominent Washington, D.C. area priest.
In a statement Monday, Opus Dei Vicar Monsignor Thomas Bohlin said they received a complaint of sexual misconduct against Rev. C. John McCloskey in 2002 from a woman who was receiving counseling at the Catholic Information Center in downtown D.C.
McCloskey was the priest tasked with getting big names to prepare for conversion such as Newt Gingrich, Larry Kudlow and Sam Brownback, among others, according to the Washington Post.
The disclosure of the 2005 settlement was not made public by Opus Dei until Monday.
The woman, who was not named, told the Post that McCloskey groped her several times while she was attending pastoral counseling for serious depression and issues in her marriage.
Opus Dei settled a massive sexual misconduct claim from 2002 against Rev. C. John McCloskey
She said she was racked with shame and guilt over her exchanges with McCloskey and that when she told him about her 'misperceived guilt over the interaction' in confession that he absolved her.
'I love Opus Dei but I was caught up in this coverup. I went to confession, thinking I did something to tempt this holy man to cross boundaries,' she told the Post.
She also wasn't the only one who claimed McCloskey made her uncomfortable.
A second woman told told Opus Dei that 'she was made uncomfortable by how he was hugging her,' according to the organization's spokesperson, Brian Finnerty.
Additionally, Finnerty said Opus Dei was investigating a third claim that is yet unsubstantiated made by a third woman that Finnerty called potentially 'serious.'
He only went as far to say that the third woman 'may have also suffered from misconduct by Father McCloskey' at the D.C. center.
In a statement, Opus Dei Vicar Monsignor Thomas Bohlin said McCloskey's actions at the center were 'deeply painful for the woman' who made the initial complaint 'and we are very sorry for all she suffered.'
McCloskey's settlement stems from his interactions with the woman at the DC Center (pictured) where other women have now made similar claims against McCloskey
After the investigation, Bohlin said McCloskey was removed from his job in 2003.
He said McCloskey's actions were 'deeply painful for the woman' and they 'are very sorry for all she suffered.'
Since his removal, Bohlin said McCloskey's priestly activities with women were restricted.
An Opus Dei spokesman said McCloskey was suffering from Alzheimer's and was incapacitated.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
