«Breaking News» Now that’s a first-class beauty trend: Beat the airport scanners with liquid-free skincare

Does wet and windy January leave you dreaming of your next holiday?

You’re not alone — and the beauty industry has also been considering our travel plans and how to beat the strict 100ml container limit on cosmetics, toiletries, creams, lotions and oils for cabin baggage at airport security.

The answer, according to skincare experts, is to solidify everything, from moisturiser to make-up remover. It’s the era of beauty on a stick!

‘Travelling with liquids has always been a pain,’ says skin therapist and leading make-up artist Frances Prescott. ‘Every time I went through security, I had a product taken off me. I thought: “Why am I still falling into this trap?” ’

Creating Tri-Balm, a solid, multi-functional moisturiser in a chunky tube, streamlined Frances’s beauty arsenal and removed the risk of her items being confiscated and the fuss of decanting her potions into small, security-friendly containers.

But this trend isn’t just for high-flyers. Neat, portable and guaranteed not to leak, spill or explode all over your bag, these products are perfect for the gym or freshening up at work before an evening out.

‘If I’m travelling up and down the country, or going to stay at a friend’s, I want portability, convenience and something that won’t break or spill, which you can throw in your bag,’ adds Frances. ‘It’s great for sporty people, working women, mums and people who are out and about.’ In other words, pretty much all of us.

Here, we put the best to the test . . .

COOL WAY TO SOOTHE TIRED EYES

Embryolisse Artist Secret Radiant Eye Beauty Cooling Stick, £20.50, boots.com

This cooling stick is non-perfumed and free of preservative parabens, so it’s ideal for using around my eye area, which is prone to puffiness. It’s also rich in aloe vera, glycerin, vitamin E and vitamin B3, with moisturising properties.

Dashing out to a too-early appointment, I pop it in my bag and, on the train, dot it around my tired, bleary eyes. There’s an instant tightening sensation and I feel rustled awake.

I can’t say it visibly shrinks my eye bags or reduces the dark circles, but it’s pleasantly refreshing and soothing. 3/5

CLEANSE AND GLOW ON THE GO

I boarded a plane recently with the dregs of a small, but pricey, cleanser in my hand luggage. As a result of the cabin pressure, about £30 of it seeped out — so I’m an easy convert to this sleek and solid option.

Having worked up a sweat at the gym, I dot it on. It has a non-fancy scent and contains phytic acid, naturally occurring in plants such as rice, to gently smooth and polish skin. It’s also packed with essential oils such as grapefruit peel oil, spearmint leaf oil and bergamot fruit oil. My face acquires a glow without feeling stripped. 4/5

3-IN-1 TAKES THE SOFT APPROACH

With its scent of mandarin and geranium essential oils, evocative of exotic places, this balm is heavenly. Whether you’re off to Bali or Brighton, it’s the perfect travel companion. It cleanses, if rinsed with water, exfoliates, courtesy of pumpkin seed enzymes that gently slough off dead cells, and rehydrates.

Tri-Balm also contains a form of hyaluronic acid, which helps retain moisture, and features skin-nurturing goodies — carrot oil, rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, E and F, wheatgerm oil, with protective antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and rice bran oil, for elasticity and plumpness.

It’s also free of parabens, silicone and sulphates and the tube is recycled plastic.

After use, my skin is brighter and so soft that I keep touching my cheeks in disbelief.5/5

MELT AWAY MAKE-UP IN MINUTES

This is a fabulous oil-based formula in stick form, laced with skin-pampering turmeric root extract and vitamin E.

Heading away for a weekend, I shove it in my washbag. We’re up till 3am, at which point I ache for sleep, and the chore of removing my make-up seems unbearable. I clumsily massage this in. It melts, then I lather and rinse, with no cotton wool pads required.

It takes a second application to deal with my stubborn pencil lipliner, but it speedily removes a generous slick of BB cream, greasy lipstick and press of powder. My skin feels clean and nourished and I gratefully fall into bed — having avoided a meltdown of my own! 5/5

TWIST TO TONE UP WINTER SKIN

A gorgeous water-based toner, as light and delicate as the brush of a fairy’s wing. I twist it up and rub it on to balance and revive my skin before applying foundation. My chapped winter complexion is rendered smooth and calm.

Unlike other liquid toners, Ilia’s Cucumber Water stick feels as if it’s replenishing your skin with moisture, rather than stripping it away.

Rehydrating ingredients — cucumber pulp to de-puff, aloe to soothe and chicory root to stimulate cell renewal — make this feel like a luxury (at that price, it should be). I stroke my face in delight. 4/5

SILKY BALM BANISHES STUBBORN EYELINER

Clinique Take The Day Off Eye Make-up Remover Stick, £16, clinique.co.uk

I’m not a fan of liquid or lotion eye make-up removers, as I lack the dexterity to stop them getting into my eyes.

But this silky, oil-based balm slides on, slick and precise, melting instantly on contact. I’m wearing powdery, dark eyeshadow and liquid eyeliner, which the balm smudges until I look like a raccoon, but, after a warm water rinse, every trace vanishes. 4/5

DEEP CLEAN WITH A DELICATE SHEEN

This has a sweet, mild citrusy tang, which turns out to be grapefruit peel oil. Paraben-free, it has ingredients designed to gently exfoliate and rid skin of excess oil, including rice bran, camellia Japonica seed oils and pomegranate fruit enzyme.

I smooth it on with my hands, mixing with warm water to form a lather. My skin feels fresh, with a delicate sheen. 3/5

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
