«Breaking News» M&S blunder: small print on vegan meals reveals 'not suitable for milk or egg allergy sufferers'

Marks and Spencer has come under fire after vegans discovered its new range of vegan-friendly products may not be entirely suitable for vegans after all.

Some 'Plant Kitchen' ready-meals from the upmarket food retailer bear an allergy warning that they may contain eggs and dairy - neither of which is suitable for vegans who do not eat animals or animal products, including milk, cheese, eggs, and - for some vegans - honey.

The allergy warnings are included on dishes including cauliflower popcorn, green Thai curry and mushroom stroganoff.

The marketing labels describe the products as 'suitable for vegans', but the warnings tell customers they are 'not suitable for milk or egg allergy sufferers'.

M&S's vegan range has been heavily marketed online since Christmas and includes burgers, mushroom stroganoff and roast aubergine dishes. Customers who have noticed the warnings clearly feel let down.

Hannah Dempsey said: 'I'm disappointed that this range is not suitable for milk and egg allergy sufferers. I appreciate that it's difficult due to the manufacturing processes but I'm surprised that you'd launch a vegan range without considering this.'

Karen McKinley said: 'Curious to know how a vegan product isn't suitable for milk or egg allergy sufferers. Surely being vegan there should be no trace of animal products, or if it does contain them then surely it should be marketed as vegetarian rather than vegan?'

Some customers took to Twitter to complain about the apparent inconsistency in labelling but M&S said the products were 'plant based' and it was for customers to decide whether to eat them

One customer wrote: 'I'm allergic to eggs and got SO excited for this range but loads of it says it's unsuitable for egg allergy sufferers… that's not vegan and that makes me [crying emoji].'

And another said: 'Places like M&S want to jump on the vegan bandwagon but don't understand that by way of saying it's got milk and eggs present it's not vegan! [frowning emoji].'

An M&S spokesperson said: 'Our Plant Kitchen range is 100 per cent suitable for vegans and we engaged with both the Vegan Society and Allergy UK when developing them.

'However, vegan products may not be suitable for people with severe allergies because allergens may be present in the environment in which they are made.

'This is clearly flagged on the packaging as a steer to those who need it.'

With more people than ever turning to a meat-and-dairy-free diet, especially after Christmas when many eschew meat for the month of 'Veganuary', more stores are increasing and improving their range of vegan products.

Even Greggs, bastion of the meat-and-pastry treat, launched a vegan sausage roll three days ago - to the consternation of many including MailOnline Editor At Large Piers Morgan, who replied to Greggs' tweet: 'Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns'.

Unlike allergen labelling, which is strictly regulated, there is no legal definition for 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' foods in the UK or Europe. But food labelling 'must not mislead the consumer'.

The upmarket grocer describes the Plant Kitchen range by saying: 'Whether you're going veggie, avoiding meat and dairy, or simply enjoy incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet, our new Plant Kitchen range makes every day delicious.

'The dishes span on-the-go sandwiches and grain bowls, hearty quick-fix suppers, and our amazing no-beef burger, plus staples like substitute mince and nut milks.

'Whatever you fancy, all of our Plant Kitchen dishes have been developed with a 'flavour first' mentality at their heart: think vegan bolognese enriched with miso for an intense depth of flavour, or pizza topped with jackfruit for a smokey taste and rich texture.'

Link hienalouca.com Interesting to note Looking for an investor or sponsor for a project to grow dinosaurs and relict plants. Requires the sum of investments from 400000$ to 900000$. The exact amount can not say because there are many nuances. It will be necessary to build a small laboratory with certain parameters. To all interested persons please write on an email angocman@gmail.com . It is the scientific project and I do not know whether it is possible to earn on it. The probability of success of the project is approximately 60%. That will be very interesting.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
