Hollywood celebrities have called for the Catholic high school students who stared down a Native American during protests near the Lincoln Memorial to be publicly shamed - even though new footage shows there was more to the confrontation.
Covington Catholic High School shut down its campus Tuesday as a precaution and a small protest was held outside their diocese as fallout continued over an encounter involving white teenagers, Native American marchers and a black religious sect outside the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
President Donald Trump tweeted early Tuesday that the students at Covington Catholic High School ‘have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be’ but says he hopes the teens will use the attention for good, and ‘maybe even to bring people together.’
The recorded images that initially generated outrage on social media were tightly focused on the students wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats, who seemed to laugh derisively as they surrounded an elderly Native American beating a drum.

Kathy Griffin, the comedian known for her liberal views, tweeted on Sunday: 'Ps. The reply from the school was pathetic and impotent. Name these kids.'
Longer videos from wider perspectives emerged later over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
They revealed the drummer - Omaha Nation elder Nathan Phillips - had intervened between the boys and the religious sect.
That came after the teens seemed to grow rowdier and the black street preacher who had been shouting racist statements against both groups escalated his rhetoric.
Soon, all sides were pointing fingers , giving their own accounts about feeling victimized and misunderstood.
In the wake of new video evidence showing more context to Sunday's events, actor Jamie Lee Curtis tweeted: 'There are two sides to every story. I made a snap judgment based on a photograph & I know better than to judge a book by its cover. I wasn’t there. I shouldn’t have commented. I’m glad there wasn’t violence. I hope theses two men can meet and find common ground as can WE ALL!'
But Curtis appeared to be the exception among Hollywood celebrities who took to Twitter and demanded that the high school students be publicly shamed.
Debra Messing, the star of the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, called the high school student seen in the original video smirking at Phillips an 'a*****e.'
TV host John Fugelsang said the teens are 'a model for modern U.S. Christian fundamentalism'
John Cusack tweeted on Sunday: 'This Covington School thing is beyond belief…the lack of basic Respect for an elder (any elder) is the number one symptom of a SICK society….MAGA CATHOLICS paving the road of ignorance…you are a DISGRACE…'
Michael Green, the writer known for his work on Bladerunner 2049, tweeted about Sandmann, writing: 'A face like that never changes. This image will define his life. No one need ever forgive him.'
Michael Ian Black, the comedian, also tweeted two juxtaposed pictures - one of the Covington students and Phillips at the Lincoln Memorial, and the other of a white man throwing what appears to be milk on a group of black patrons at a diner as other whites look on approvingly
Chris Evans, the Avengers actor, tweeted: 'This is appalling. The ignorance. The gall. The disrespect. It’s shameful. And sadly on brand.'
Ed Asner, the legendary actor, tweeted: 'This is a disgrace. This is not America'
Rosie O'Donnell, who has always been an outspoken advocate of liberal causes, tweeted two photos: one of Sandmann smirking on Saturday, and the other of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh with a similar facial expression

The student, Nicholas Sandmann, a junior at Covington Catholic, sat down for an interview with Savannah Guthrie of NBC's TODAY show.
Guthrie on Tuesday posted a photo on her Twitter feed showing her sitting next to Sandmann during the taping of the interview.
'Sitting down with Nicholas Sandmann - the student at the center of the protest controversy at the Lincoln Memorial. Airs tomorrow,' the TODAY anchor tweeted.
But the post generated tens of thousands of comments, most of them negative and critical of Guthrie and TODAY who are being accused of 'normalizing hate' and 'giving racism a platform.'
In a brief clip of the interview posted to social media, Guthrie asked Sandmann if he feels he owes an apology.
'As far as standing there, I had every right to do so,' Sandmann told Guthrie.
'My position is that I was not disrespectful to Mr. Phillips,' he said.
'I respect him, I would like to talk to him.

Sandmann sat down with NBC News' Savannah Guthrie in an interview airing Wednesday morning. When asked whether he thinks he owes anyone an apology, Sandmann said: 'As far as standing there, I had every right to do so.' The students were attending an anti-abortion rally
'I mean, in hindsight, I wish we could’ve walked away and avoided the whole thing.'
Sandmann has maintained that Phillips approached him, not the other way around.
The Sandmann family has retained a public relations firm to help the teen navigate the media firestorm, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.

'These apologies are welcome and necessary, but they don't address the damage that cannot be undone which was inflicted upon young people who are about to embark on adulthood - applying to colleges, looking for employment, etc,' she tweeted
'These young people will forever have these smears follow them through their life every time they proffer their resume with the word "Covington" on it,' she tweeted
'And yet those who perpetrated this destruction, no matter how unintended, are still at their jobs, with nary a consequence for their reckless behavior,' she tweeted
'It seems to me that an apology without some kind of accompanying action which speaks to the seriousness of their transgression - a suspension from work, some loss of pay - renders any apology empty,' she tweeted
'Some kind of compensatory action would go a long way in signaling their recognition of the seriousness of their transgression and help to restore what's left of the public's very fragile trust in their reputations as trustworthy journalists,' Heaton tweeted
. 'However, I don't believe this will happen.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
