«Breaking News» John Legend is only artist to speak out against R Kelly

John Legend is the only star to appear in the documentary Surviving R Kelly.

The first of the six-parter aired on Lifetime on Thursday, interviewing dozens former friends, family members and colleagues about the singer who all make grim claims about the singer abusing women and young girls. 

But Legend is essentially the only fellow artist who agreed to speak out where many more declined.

'R. Kelly has brought so much pain to so many people,' John says in an interview. 'Time’s up for R. Kelly.'

Producer dream hampton claimed Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Dave Chappelle, Celine Dion, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim and Questlove all refused to participate.

'When it comes to celebrities, It was incredibly difficult to get people who had collaborated (artistically) with Kelly to come forward, she told Detroit Free Press, pointing out that Gaga, Badu, Dion, Jay-Z and Chappelle had all been critical of him in the past. 

'That makes John Legend even more of a hero for me,' she said.

On Thursday night John tweeted: To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all.

'I believe these women and don't give a f*ck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.'

She also told Shadow And Act most people just don't want to touch it, adding that Questlove told her "I would do anything for you but I can't do this."

'It's not because they support him, it's because it's so messy and muddy,' she said. 'It's that turning away that has allowed this to go on.'

After this interview was published on Thursday Questlove took to Twitter to try clarify his position.   

'I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the R Kelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the “good times” portion of the doc, like stanning for his “genius”. I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him,' he wrote.

'Just wanna make that abundantly clear in a non “he doth protest too much” way. That quote makes it look like I’m protecting him. I’m thinking “damn I don’t wanna be the one guy I always am in documentaries fawning over someone I detest. So make ZERO mistake on my positioning.'

However hampton doubled down responding: 'I didn't ask you about his "Genius". I've never thought he was a genius. I asked you to come on camera and say the same thing you said on Twitter. I told you I need Black male allies.

According to Just Jared, the documentary also briefly features Wendy Williams, Charlamagne Tha God, and Chance the Rapper – who voices regret for working with Kelly amid the recent sexual abuse allegations. 

Earlier on Thursday Aaliyah's mother Diane Haughton hit out at the documentary because it features an interview with a back-up singer who claimed she saw R Kelly having sex with the then R&B star aboard a tour bus in 1994.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
