Casey was last seen playing with two other children and his grandmother realized he was missing when the two kids returned inside the house without him on Tuesday.
The grandmother then called 911 after searching for him with other family members but failed to find any trace of the toddler after 45 minutes.
Craven County Sheriff's Deputies responded within minutes and the search has only grown since then.
The FBI and U.S. Marine Corps from nearby bases at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point joined the search effort on Wednesday, Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughs announced the second day of the search.
The search effort stretched through Wednesday starting at 7.30am with around 400 to 500 volunteers until it was called off 9.30pm, according to WCTI.
'The terrain was woods. It was thick in places. Some places it wasn't that thick, but we took our time and you see the next person, and you look and you look and you look,' volunteer Max Dudley said to ABC.

'You have so many people volunteering from our community and surrounding areas because they were putting themselves in the shoes of the family. What would happen if that was one of their children? It's just amazing to see everyone come together to help,' youth pastor Jonathan Ipock said.
'As it got darker, it was scary out there. I just can't imagine a 3-year-old being out there,' volunteer mother-of-three Donna Harris said.
The Sheriff expressed concern over sinkholes and deep water ditches in the area, which were being assessed by divers.
'Today, hundreds of professional searchers and volunteers walked through rough terrain around the home to try and locate Casey. Volunteers were sent home for the night due to safety concerns. Professionally trained searchers will continue to work overnight,' the Craven County Sheriff's Office posted late Wednesday evening.
'Additional search assets will return in the morning. Volunteers should meet at the staging area at 8.00 tomorrow morning at New Haven Church located at 2755 Aurora Road, Ernul, North Carolina,' the office added.
Temperatures dropped to the freezing low 30s in North Carolina Wednesday evening and Sheriff Hughs said the child wasn't adequately dressed for the weather.
Sheriff Hughes said they will not stop until Casey Hathaway is found.
The sheriff's office urged residents to check storage sheds, vehicles and their property for the child.

The FBI, State Bureau of Investigation and the NC Highway Patrol were also called in to assist in the search on Wednesday.
Volunteers spent the entire day combing through the heavily wooded area.
Sheriff Hughs said they were conducting a missing child investigation and would not say if they believed anything more sinister might have happened.
'The family have been extremely cooperative and we just want to bring their son home to them,' Sheriff Hughes said.
Casey is described as a white male with blond hair and brown eyes. He is 28 inches tall and weighing 25 pounds.
Anyone with information about Casey's whereabouts is urged to contact the Craven County Sheriff's Office immediately at 252-636-6620.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
