«Breaking News» Furious Samsung customers take to social media after being unable to remove app

Facebook's app cannot be deleted off certain Samsung devices leading many users to complain on social media over concerns about their privacy.

Social media users claim they only had the option to disable the app, but none to permanently delete it from their devices.

Certain Android-based devices come with the Facebook app already installed, leading to questions about a behind the scenes deal between the two companies.

Nick Winke, a photographer in the Pacific northwest, came across forums online and was alarmed to learn that the software couldn't be deleted from some Samsung phones.

Mr Winke used Facebook on his Samsung Galaxy S8, which was already built into his phone, to connect with friends but claims he 'didn't want to be stuck with it'.

After reading the comments online, he tried to delete the software but found that it was 'undeletable'.

'It just absolutely baffles me that if I wanted to completely get rid of Facebook that it essentially would still be on my phone, which brings up more questions,' Mr Winke said in an interview with Bloomberg.

'Can they still track your information, your location, or whatever else they do? We the consumer should have say in what we want and don't want on our products.'

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker, told the publication that there is an option to disable the pre-installed app and once disabled, it is no longer running.

While a spokesman for Facebook could not comment fully, he told MailOnline: 'The disabled version of the app acts like it’s been deleted, so it doesn’t continue collecting data or sending information back to Facebook.'

The company declined to provide Bloomberg with a list of the firms it has deals with for permanent apps, saying that the agreements 'vary by region and type'.

MailOnline has contacted Samsung for a comment but had not received a reply at the time of publication.

In the last two years, people have become more aware of their privacy rights after the Cambridge Analytica political scandal and Facebook's part in it.

In early 2018, a whistleblower made claims that data firm Cambridge Analytica harvested data from millions of people's Facebook profiles without their consent.

Bosses from Cambridge Analytica were secretly recorded boasting about their hand in manipulating the 2016 US election results by using online tools to target users.

While some users have deleted Facebook from their phones in protest following these revelations, others say they simply want the option to do so.

Not having this lead many Android users to question Samsung’s deal to sell phones with a permanent version of Facebook installed.

WHAT IS THE CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA SCANDAL?

Communications firm Cambridge Analytica has offices in London, New York, Washington, as well as Brazil and Malaysia.

The company boasts it can 'find your voters and move them to action' through data-driven campaigns and a team that includes data scientists and behavioural psychologists.

'Within the United States alone, we have played a pivotal role in winning presidential races as well as congressional and state elections,' with data on more than 230 million American voters, Cambridge Analytica claims on its website.

The company profited from a feature that meant apps could ask for permission to access your own data as well as the data of all your Facebook friends.

This meant the company was able to mine the information of 87 million Facebook users even though just 270,000 people gave them permission to do so.

This was designed to help them create software that can predict and influence voters' choices at the ballot box.

This information is said to have been used to help the Brexit campaign in the UK.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
