«Breaking News» FEMAIL tests the best solution underwear on the high street

From backless dresses to figure-hugging skirts, there are some occasions when ordinary lingerie just won't cut it.

Luckily the high street is awash this season with 'solution underwear' that promises to streamline your shape and solve your sartorial woes - but are they any good?

The new generation of high-tech bras, knickers and bodices are designed to instantly transform your figure, smoothing out any lumps and bumps for a flattering silhouette.

From '10Ibls lighter' waist cinchers to 'fat free' leggings, model and presenter Heather Elrick, 29, from London tried out six of the best underwear solutions the market has to offer to see which ones work — and which ones are just pants.

The '10Ibs lighter' waist cincher

Miraclesuit Wonderful Panel Extra Firming Waist Cincher Look 10Ibs Lighter, Figleaves, £39.95

This boned corset targets slimming and smoothing on the waist and tummy with extra firm control. It has a fifteen hook fastening and stretch side panels to allow for more movement.

Heather's verdict: 'I needed a bit of help getting this one on! However, it fit beautifully. It streamlined my shape, making my waist tiny, it also wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it would be! The boning on the sides did make it look a little strange from the side, so it might not look great under silk or satin clothing.'

The thigh slimmer

The Wacoal Beyond Naked Thigh Slimmer modeled by Heather targets thighs, tummy, waist hips and gave an effective bum lift too. Heather also wears the Dorina Ariella Push-up Bra, £18

Wacoal Beyond Naked Thigh Slimmer, Her Room, £55.81

Not only do these shaping shorts target your thighs, they also focus on your tummy, waist, hips and bum. Shaping panels flatten the tummy, smooths hips and lifts your bum. They have a 'second-skin' fit to avoid a VPL.

Heather's verdict: 'When it comes to thigh control, you can sometimes be left with a bulge around your thigh where the pant leg ends, however these skimmed without digging in. I was quite shocked at just how much of a 'bum lift' these gave.

'I tried the medium level pair and they gave my bum a slightly strange, shelf-like shape from the side. However, when I put a dress on, it looked great! They weren't as good at holding my waist in but slimmed the thighs and gave that lift.'

The all-rounder

Heather's favourite piece was The Outer Body. It claims to take up to 5cm off your waist. Heather said it 'totally transformed' her body

The Outer Body, Heist, £120

The Outer body claims to take up 5cm off your waist and 'moves with your body, not against it'. It has seam-free edges so it can't be seen under clothes and the hook and eye fastening at the crotch makes bathroom breaks easy. You can wear your own bra with it, or go without. The bra straps are adjustable for a comfortable fit.

Heather's verdict: 'This was by far my favourite item. It totally transformed my body shape from the front, nipping my waist in whilst skimming my hips the right amount to get an hourglass shape.

'It was slightly less supportive around the bottom but still gave some lift. Although a struggle to get on, it did not feel uncomfortable or too tight.'

Rating: 9/10

The 'invisible bra'

Heather wears the backless and strapless bra and knickers in Tutti Frutti by Invisibra. The stick-on bra is supposed to lift, shape and support your boobs and comes in many different colourways

Backless bra, Invisibra, £38

This backless, strapless stick-on bra is supposed to lift, shape and support your boobs. The cups are slightly padded and there's a layer of adhesive to stick to your skin.

Heather's verdict: 'The packaging and the lace pattern on this was beautiful, especially as most solution underwear is either nude or black. It took a few attempts to get on properly and get each cup positioned equal to the other.

'It felt a bit too small with not much coverage and I didn't feel much of a boost. However, when I tried the dress on over it I was pleasantly surprised! It definitely looked better once under a dress.'

The 'fat free' leggings

These high-waisted leggings worn by Heather provide firm control through your tummy, waist and legs. Heather teams the leggings with the High Impact Sports Bra, Marks & Spencer, £29.50 for a pack of two

Maidenform Fat-free Dressing Legging, Figleaves, £32.50

These high-waisted leggings provide firm control through your tummy, waist and legs, helping to smooth your silhouette. They claim to be the perfect 'confidence booster'.

Heather's verdict: 'I think I may purchase these for myself! I was surprisingly impressed by these - as normally control leggings can be very thick and awkward to not only get on, but also difficult to move comfortably in.

'These however, were great! They had multiple layers and came up quite high on the waist so they nipped me in. I liked how comfortable they were to move in and they're also very versatile. I felt great in these!'

Rating: 8/10

The 'tummy flattening' knickers

Heather also tried the Light Control No VPL All Over Lace Thong. Although it didn't offer much support, Heather said it had a flattering cut and style. She also wears the matching Marks & Spencer bra, £20

These shapewear knickers offer a light tummy control and VPL technology for a streamlined silhouette and flawless finish.

Heather's verdict: 'In my opinion you can't go wrong with M&S underwear, and these were very pretty and looked great on. Sadly, they didn't provide much at all in terms of support or holding my stomach in, but the flattering cut and style still flattered my figure. Very reasonably priced too!'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
