A former Ohio guidance counselor has tearfully apologized for having sex with her 17-year-old student while being sentenced to two years behind bars.

Rebecca Sparrow, 37, appeared at her sentencing hearing on Monday where she apologized for her 'betrayal and broken trust' before jurors.

The recently-divorced mother-of-two was sentenced to two years in jail by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Amy Corrigall Jones after pleading guilty to one count of sexual battery in November.

Judge Jones called her acts 'perverse'.

'I'm so sorry for my betrayal and broken trust. You all expected more from me — and I let you down,' she told the court and the student's family, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

'I know no words can heal the pain I’ve caused,' she added.

Sparrow was a counselor at Cuyahoga Falls High School in Summit County, Ohio when she had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student from February to May 2016, according to WJW.

The student, now 20, was not present in the courtroom but did write a letter to the court.

The student was referred to the high school counselor because his parents were going through a divorce and he expressed suicidal thoughts.

But instead of helping him, Sparrow had sex with him, prosecutors said.

'She fully understood what she was doing and the wrongfulness, and continued to do it — over and over and over,' Assistant Prosecutor Felicia Easter said during Sparrow’s sentencing.

She said that Sparrow knew that the student was underage and was in a 'fragile mental state' due to his family problems.

She also told the boy multiple times that she'd lose her job and go to jail if they ever got caught.

Sparrow was placed on administration leave in January 2018 and she later resigned.

Sparrow was hired by the district in 2006 and first worked in special education at Bolich Middle School. She became a guidance counselor at the high school in 2015.

Sparrow claimed the student initiated the relationship and consented to it in a psycho-sexual evaluation.

The evaluator said Sparrow failed to display empathy or remorse for her actions and instead fixated on her humiliation.

Sparrow had no prior criminal record and says following the event she's had to attend weekly counseling sessions.

Her attorney argued that she deserved probation rather prison time. The former student also didn't think Sparrow deserved prison time.

'He has had time to reflect on what happened, how this affects him, and it is his belief she should not be incarcerated,' Sparrow's attorney Mike Callahan said.

Still she was sentenced to two years in prison and the judge noted that probation department officials found her to be a moderate risk for reoffending given her attraction to teenage males.

She originally faced up to five years in jail for the relationship.

She was designated as a Tier III sex offender and will have to register her address with sheriff's officials every 90 days for the rest of her life.

Sparrow is set to apply for early release from prison.

'This has taken a great toll on her and her family,' her lawyer said.

With her conviction, she won't be able to work as a school counselor after she's released.

Rebecca Sparrow, 37, ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
