A drink-driver who crashed his Jaguar in a field before blaming 'bad workmanship' by a garage has been banned from driving for nearly one-and-a-half years.

Stephen Knowles, 55, of Redcar, North Yorkshire, claimed the replacement of a wheel bearing on his Jaguar X-Type was done incorrectly, causing an accident that saw him come off a road.

When police arrived on the scene in the village of Dunsdale, he was breathalysed and gave a reading of 84 - more than twice the legal limit of 35.

Appearing at Teesside Magistrates' Court yesterday, Knowles - who lives in a £160,000 semi-detached house - pleaded guilty to drink driving and was banned from the road for 17 months.

Emma Cruikshank, prosecuting, said Knowles's car left the carriageway of the B1269 Redcar Road and ended up in a field on October 21 last year.

She said: 'The police arrived shortly after the crash and the defendant was spoken to and was breathalysed. He gave a reading of 84.

'He was then arrested and taken to the police station after the hospital. Witnesses said the car left the carriageway without hitting any other vehicles.'

Once at the station, Knowles provided a blood sample which gave a reading of 163mg of alcohol in his system - the legal blood limit is 80mg.

Nick Woodhouse, defending, said Knowles was a 'plant driver who has now lost his job because of this conviction' and that he blamed 'bad workmanship' for the crash.

He said: 'He may now also lose his house as he cannot afford to pay the mortgage. A week before the incident he had a wheel bearing replaced on his vehicle.

'The wheel where the bearing was replaced has come off and he believes it has not been repaired properly, and that's what caused the accident.

'He had been driving for some time with no issues until the accident. He'd gone to the pub the night before, had drank and then driven home.

'This offence happened the next morning, after he'd had sleep and had breakfast. The alcohol was still in his system from the night before, he felt he was OK to drive.'

Knowles was also ordered to pay £190 court costs. Mr Woodhouse added: 'The effects (of the hearing) will be quite devastating for him.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
