Debbie McGee has urged fans to have regular mammograms after revealing the NHS funded breast x-ray helped save her life.
Speaking on her BBC Radio Berkshire show, the TV personality, 60, revealed she is in the early stages of recovery following surgery to remove two tumours, discovered during a routine scan.
And she admits paying for extra mammograms on top of the X-rays available through every four-years through the National Health Service helped detect the pin-prick size growths at an early stage.
Get it done: Debbie McGee has urged fans to have regular mammograms after revealing the NHS funded breast X-ray helped save her life
'Over the years, because mine were always clear, I’ve never had anything wrong with me before,' she explained.
'I went in this time in late October and then they called me into a room and said what they had found wasn’t actually breast cancer but it’s where the tissues change and that usually changes into breast cancer.
'So I’d caught it at the earliest possible moment, and they detected it because I’d had regular mammograms and they compared it to my one before.'
Discovery: Debbie, a Strictly Come Dancing finalist in 2017, admitted she received treatment shortly after finishing a panto adaptation of Sleeping Beauty
Debbie, a Strictly Come Dancing finalist in 2017, admitted she received treatment shortly after finishing a panto adaptation of Sleeping Beauty at Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre.
She underwent surgery on January 17, just four days after completing her run as Sleeping Beauty, and catching both tumours early means she will not be left with any permanent scarring.
'That’s how early they got it, and that’s why I want to talk about it because I want other people to be in my position, because they found one small tumour that was a bit further down the line and one that was literally just starting,' she said.
Fit and healthy: Debbie was a Strictly Come Dancing finalist with Giovanni Pernice in 2017, but she has been advised to avoid all physical exercise for the next six weeks
'The reason as I keep saying is, go and have mammograms because if I’d left it even another six months, I would probably need radiotherapy or chemotherapy and go on medication.'
She added: 'Go and get those scans. If you’re offered them on the NHS, don’t miss them because I’d gone along to the screenings where there’s like a static caravan in the library car park or whatever, and I’ve got there early and they’ve said “The two people in front of you haven’t turned up so you can go in early”.
'Well, you know, not turning up and you don’t have one for another four years, could be too late. It’s saving your life. Even more importantly it’s saving you going through all that awful treatment.
'I’ve had so many friends who’ve gone through the chemo, had mastectomies and whatever, and are scarred. I want everybody to be like me, which is... I’m so elated because it’s all positive.
'Statistics of it coming back, because they caught it so early, are absolutely minimal. So I really am now back to my normal self.'
Old times: The TV personality was married to magician Paul Daniels from 1988 to his death in 2016, aged 77. He had been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour a year before his death
Despite the positive outcome Debbie has been advised to avoid all physical activity while she recovers, with gym sessions, heavy lifting, housework and cooking all ruled out for the next six weeks.
She has even been told to stay away from the road, resulting in loved ones rallying round to help the star during her recovery.
'I’m being chauffeured everywhere, mostly by my sister and some close neighbours and friends, and I’ve had a few meals made for me by them, so I haven’t cooked or anything since,' she admitted.
'I’ve been a good girl. I rested for a week. I slept for most of that. And I’m just easing myself back in now for the next week or so.'

Inner strength: Debbie previously admitted that thinking about how Paul would have dealt with the diagnosis gave her the confidence to carry on
Speaking to The Sun, Debbie admitted that thinking about how Paul would have dealt with the diagnosis gave her the confidence to carry on.
'When you’ve been with somebody as long as I was with Paul, you know, you were so intertwined in each other’s lives and he taught me so much,' she said.
Debbie has previously spoken about her struggles after losing Paul, which hit her when she stopped busying herself with day-to-day life.
‘It didn’t come immediately after Strictly,’ she recalls. ‘I did panto afterwards — God knows how I got through that, but I did. Then I went on tour with Strictly. Then around March — a difficult month because Paul died in March, his birthday is in March, our anniversary is in March — I got home, and I just stopped.
‘I didn’t want to get out of bed. I couldn’t make a cup of tea. Part of it must have been sheer physical exhaustion, but there was more to it. I changed. My brain had changed.
'I’ve always been the most optimistic person. If I’m feeling low I can look in the mirror and say: “Come on, Debbie, let’s do this. Put on your make-up and smile.” Suddenly I couldn’t.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
