Chance The Rapper, 25, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, found himself embroiled in controversy for comments he made in the final episodes of the six-part Lifetime documentary Surviving R. Kelly on Saturday.
The Chicagoan said working with R. Kelly was 'a mistake' but that he 'didn't value the accusers' stories because they were black women' in a sit down with Cassius' Jamilah Lemieux for an interview that was used in the episode.
He later went on to claim that his words were taken out of context.
Mea culpa: Chance The Rapper apologized for working with R. Kelly while claiming that comments he made about the accusers which aired on Lifetime's Surviving R. Kelly series were taken out of context
The series only used a part of Chance's mea culpa on working with the 51-year-old disgraced rapper.
This prompted social media to harangue the philanthropist for stating that he 'didn't care' because the accusers were 'black women.'
Chance took to Twitter to address the backlash.
'The quote was taken out of context,' he began, 'but the truth is any of us who ever ignored the R Kelly stories, or ever believed he was being setup/attacked by the system (as black men often are) were doing so at the detriment of black women and girls.'
Explanation: Chance took to social media with a powerful statement about his comments that he didn't care about R. Kelly's accusations because 'the accusers were black women'
In Chances words: The rapper used his platform to clarify his thoughts on the matter and speak to the larger issue of the systematic oppression of black women
Adding: 'I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him and for taking this long to speak out.'
Chance worked with Kelly in his 2015 song Somewhere in Paradise and also performed with him at Lollapalooza in 2014.
He later went a step further tweeting: 'Anyone mentioning that I have black women in my family is deliberately missing the point. Regardless of the proximity of beneficial BW in your life, or being black yourself, we are all capable of subconsciously discrediting BW and their stories because its indoctrinated.'
Accused: The six-part Lifetime series about the mountain of sexual misconduct allegations against R. Kelly aired it's final two episodes on Saturday
While reflecting on his work with Kelly, who's been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women (several underage), Chance admitted to Lemieux that the allegations weren't at the forefront of his mind.
'At the time, it wasn't even present in my mind that people could feel any type of way about his presence on a track of mine,' he admitted in the interview.
'I think for a long time I was only able to understand R. Kelly's situation and presence in the world when it comes down to his trial and his accusations and his accusers as a victim.'
He added: 'I don't know if that's because I'm from Chicago or 'cause he made great music or 'cause he is a black man.'
Victim: 'I think for a long time I was only able to understand R. Kelly's situation and presence in the world when it comes down to his trial and his accusations and his accusers as a victim,' Chance said in the interview
'Maybe I didn't care because I didn't value the accusers' stories because they were black women,' he reflected.
His next statements were used, in part, in the Lifetime series.
'We're programmed to really be hypersensitive to black male oppression,' Chance explained. 'But black women are exponentially [a] higher oppressed and violated group of people just in comparison to the whole world.'
'Maybe I didn't care because I didn't value the accusers' stories because they were black women,' he reflected.
Adding: 'Usually, n****s that get in trouble for s**t like this, on their magnitude of celebrity, it's light-skinned women or white women. That's when it's a big story. I've never really seen any pictures of R. Kelly's accusers.'
Support: The journalist who conducted the interview with Chance stood by him, his statements, and his support of black women
Lemieux expressed her support of Chance following the episode tweeting: 'FYI, I conducted the interview with Chance in May. He spoke clearly and unequivocally in support of BW and the victims.'
The first of the six-parter aired on Lifetime last week, interviewing dozens former friends, family members and colleagues about the singer who all make grim claims about Kelly abusing women and young girls.
Kelly has long denied all of the accusations made against him.
John Legend was essentially the only fellow artist who agreed to speak out against Kelly, where many more declined.
Fighting back: Kelly has long denied all of the accusations made against him
'R. Kelly has brought so much pain to so many people,' John said in an interview. 'Time's up for R. Kelly.'
Support flooded in for Legend following his episode but he brushed it off.
On Thursday night John tweeted: 'To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all.
'I believe these women and don't give a f*ck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.'
Standing with survivors: John Legend was one of the only celebrities involved in the docu-series to call out Kelly as a 'serial child rapist'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
